Living close to the ocean is my favorite place to be.
And adding the fact it is a small island, even better for me.

I love the constant breeze, that comes from everywhere,
One direction the ocean, the other is the bay air.

A little over 6 square miles, we don't have much space to grow.
But I think that is to our advantage, something good to know.

But when the hurricane of 2012 came bearing down our way.
A mandatory evacuation was issued, but still my decision, did I go or stay?

I went back and forth, not sure what to do.
I didn't want to leave my home, but not sure if I wanted to go down with it too!

I decided to stay, I was not going down without a fight.
I pulled together all of the emergency necessities to prepare for a long night.

Watching the storm approach, was something that was surreal.
I was frightened, I was brave, I wasn't sure what I really did feel.

It came with it's fury and hit our beloved island town, 
and in the noise and the dark, not sure what was up, not sure what was down.

I said a prayer, that God would protect all within this storm's reach.
And not feel that it was something that was needed to teach.

Let us all survive this night, please, and at not to high a cost.
We have had enough devastation, don't make this one an all is lost.

Suddenly, it sounded like the ocean waves were crashing into my livingroom.
I wondered if this was what they referring to when using the word doom.

Water came rushing in one of my sliding doors,
I ran for buckets and towels, to soak up the water from my floors.

The storm seemed to rage on and on and on.
I rethought my decision, maybe I should have gone.

But this hurricane, slowly began to subside,
The rain let up, the ocean waves lessened, the winds too had died.

I had made it, I was so grateful, the emergency equipment, had come in handy.
I, my home, my island, were so fortunate to have survived  "Hurricane Sandy".
