Poem
When I recall eating those old and stale cookies she gave me and the way she used to feed them to me. She didn’t care that I might get sick or throw up She just said, “Eat, they’re good for you.” “I’ll eat them for you,” I said, “but you have to give me something.” She looked at the sky and a second later replied OK and began putting some cookies on my small plate. I devoured two quickly. After I had eaten the two, I asked her if I could get my present now. She looked heavenward again and replied, “OK.” I said come here, I want a kiss. She again looked at the clouds passing by for a short second then replied, “OK.” A memorable first kiss. She was six and I was 8. That moment never died. We kissed as if we had been kissing longer than our short lives. Long before I knew what a soul mate was I felt an immediate close connection. I knew we were soul mates in that exhilarating unforgettable moment. I looked for that feeling in the girls I dated as a teenager and as a young adult, but none came my way that gave me anywhere near that same exhilaration. Later, by accident, I ran into her pushing a baby cart in the park. We exchanged a short conversation. She said she was married with three kids. We talked for a bit and before she got up to leave, she said, “I often think about the kiss, our kiss. I have never felt a kiss like that again.” “Neither have I and I dream about you often. That’s why I never got married. As far as I was concerned, you were it for me.” She got up from the park bench, straightened her dress, “Well, I gotta go now. It has been the most enjoyable fifteen minutes I’ve spent in a very long time, nice to have seen you. Maybe we can meet again?” in a matter-of-fact tone. I stood up and noticed a tear roll down her cheek. “Are you OK? I asked. She looked up as she used to, “Just a little nostalgic, good times weren’t they?” I nodded, said we would see each other again. She said, “I believe that too, but not in this world,” she turned and promptly walked out of view. I yelled as she disappeared around the corner not knowing if she heard me, “We are forever. This was one stop with many more to come. In the scheme of love, you and I are forever, my love. We are tethered at the heart.”
