Poem

The boat slowly turned at an unmarked waterway,
   and foliage dropped behind us like a curtain of green;
   as we glided between vegetation thick as a screen,
everything was shades of green as civilization fell away.
Thoughts of my altruistic devotion was beginning to sway,
   I had come to this wild place unseen;
   now I was regretting as I took a drink from my canteen,
the real truth-  my deep fear I was trying to  downplay . . . 

Thousands of sounds and birds were loudly shrieking,
   and the dark slimy water held no reflection;
   I took a deep gulp-   courage and words seeking,
I wanted to proclaim loudly-  CHANGE direction, please!
   Because, I swear this place is horrible and reeking,
      and for jungles it seems I have no affection . . .
