Rhyming slang is a type of wordplay in which a familiar word or phrase is replaced by a longer phrase that rhymes with it, often with the rhyming word left out. In poetry and dialect writing, it can add local color, humor, and social voice, especially in London speech. For example, stairs may be called apples and pears, and then shortened to apples.
