Victory and Pain

when the soldiers returned
after winning the battle
none of us found it strange
the fact that in their faces
there was not a semblance of peace
we know the anguish
by violating your own convictions
hurts more than the bayonet
that's why these young people
who should be exulting with joy
carry on their shoulders
the weight of an unparalleled sadness

The first six lines stand quite well alone, Marco, but the explanation as to why seems necessary, and you have done that quite well. Somehow I have always felt there is little joy in a victorious battle, for one must face the wounded and the dead.

I imagine the pain of wounding and killing, unwilling, is too heavy to carry, but a soldier is given no choice, of course.
