Silence On the Hills

as quickly as it began
it seemed to come to an end
like a summer storm raging
the damage could be seen

the small town remembered
as they gathered on fields
to honor their hometown heroes
lost to another senseless war

in little paper pamphlets
soldiers faces smiled proud
beneath each name
the date they succombed

family members
waved flickering candles
in remembrance of sacrifice
as amazing grace replaced
the silence on the hills

eyes cried
like summer skies
as darkness sighed

thank you so much Janice.... it looked like they had some kind of pamphlets and even maybe a candle...it took some thinking over what could have been going on, maybe Line will let us know the actual event that occurred.... stay safe... hugs and blessings!

I am glad that you are home, writing these wonderful poems. Enjoy it, for I am enjoying reading them and keep the faith we will all be going back to work soon with a cure in place. I visualize it happening sooner rather than later.

Evocative of a small town flavor 'back when' that's barely recognizable in today's America. Resonates well with me, Sandra. Nicely done. Best always, Gershon

Thank you Gershon... times have changed... many close family times and community events like this have dwindled away... they should be remembered always... hugs and blessings

I like your interpretation of the photo--it makes perfect sense the way you describe it--much credit to your creativity--you gave the photo a special voice. Excellent, as always, Sandy.

thank you Vijay...to me it looked like he had a candle but wasn't sure and he and the other person nearby had what appeared to be pamphlets of some sort... like a program you would see at a church or event... it was the 50's so was trying to figure out what it could be and the contest description said write a poignant poem...if I read it right... hugs

we should always remember those gave their lives in battle and also commend those who actively risk their lives in current conflict around the world - they are all true heroes and heroines. a powerful piece Sandra:-) hugs Jan xx

Reminds me of the Memorial day celebrations they used to hold in the small town where I grew up. This was wonderful Sandy, you have captured this moment in time beautifully. Best wishes in the contest

Thank you so much Chris... I think lots of small towns used to celebrate this way back when... not so much these days... hugs
