Mckayla the Magnificent

The runway runs into her trained eyes
like a roadway that rushes red
into the dreams of her electrified soul,
she's so pretty in her disciplined perfection
a young body that knows years of rigor and ritual
with a mind measured for acrobatic ambition,
she's run this gauntlet so many times before
but the danger and thrill is somehow new,
her hands and feet are stained with bone chalk
memories of fingers, toes, ankles and wrists
twisted, torn and bent in pursuit of excellence,
her ears close to the crowd
she is in her own arena at this moment
no judges, no spectators, no competitors
just the trail to olympic truth
and that ancient apparatus, the vault,
the one she loves and fears,
vulnerable in her scarlet athletic elegance
Team, God and Country
are the drumbeats of her heart right now,
nerves of gold and breaths of bravery
fuel her focused desire to be the very best,
she draws a line on the mat with her foot
everyone knows the score
and everyone knows what the dare is,
the sprint begins with a wildcat spirit
total commitment, no blinks, no doubts,
no stopping this star girl
impeccable thrust to the floor
backflip to the vault for a stellar catapult
hands on the block in harmony
producing a body torque of tight spring propulsion
and she's up like an arrow to the lights
arms X'd over her breast
head high to the heavens
spinning upside down with sweet finesse
an audience in awe of her abeyance,
she lands like a landmark lovely and undeniable in grace
no stumble, no stutter, only stupendous balance
feet firm, legs straight and back curved with class,
she throws her arms back as an angel appeased in glory -

In the 2012 Olympic Games in London
McKayla Maroney executed the most beautiful and perfect
vault jump in the history of gymnastics,
guaranteeing the U.S. women a gold medal victory.

Justin, this is an awe-struck symphony to determination and grace. The rhythm of your lines mirrors the precision and explosiveness of McKayla’s vault--“total commitment, no blinks, no doubts” had me breathless. You capture not just the movement, but the mind of an athlete, and it’s truly electric. An epic tribute worthy of its muse.

Noticing the synergy of poetry and the physicality of McKayla's performance is a great observation Alesia, and is a proof your artistic talent as well. An athlete's mentality is a marvelous blend of willpower and faith. Some of the most intense feelings and emotions are induced by the thrill and pressure of competition, to the very magnitude of addiction...J.A.B.

These are wonderful impressions of a perceptive heart of a great poet on Beauty! Nothing allures the mind more than a special and unique perfection performed by an imperfect human nature! Nothing is more appealing than a harmony of body and soul.. heart and mind.. elegance and charm! A unique pen rendering what is unique! A great pleasure reading your deep poetry, Justin! My deepest regards and blessings.

Perhaps we are perfect in our imperfection Poetess. For those who believe in Imperfection I ask...other than human will, or nature, what else in the Universe is imperfect? Your excitement is beautiful to me Besma...J.A.B.

This was an immensely awesome dedication poem, Justin. It is special when we come across those electrified, dedicated souls. You have a soul like this I am sure. Beautifully written -so much focus and so much drive. Something I wish everyday for more of. "memories of fingers, toes, ankles and wrists twisted, torn and bent in pursuit of excellence" Love those lines! <3 Always, Laura

The results are evident in the execution of our perseverance and goals Laura...truth lives through us, and nothing, nor anyone can eradicate the life of truth which we manifest and impart to others directly or indirectly. What McKayla achieved is one of the most remarkable things I've ever seen. You too, have a special kind of truth living in you Poetess...J.A.B.
