Among the Trees

AMONG THE TREES

Among the trees the storm’s a distant roar
As treetops thrash in fractious discontent
The dry leaves barely stir on forest floor
Adjacent worlds contrasting lives consent

And so in life we seek a shielding grove
Safe haven with world gales a distant sigh
Though should we a brief journey choose to rove
May find space torn in tempest hue and cry

How distant yet how near the chaos reign
How fragile therefore might our hedges stand
A genial forbearance cedes to bane
Complacent comfort truly a dead hand

The bounds of freedom, should they be neglected
Could we assume to live in realms protected

Freedom is very fragile: it requires constant care if we are to remain happy in our environment, and loving and caring with one another. Without freedom, we are very sad sacks. We may then just reach up -- through the canopy -- praying to be swept away. Love this work!

Thank you for your thoughtful comments, Joe. Your observations, (taking the allegory even further) are, as always, much appreciated,

Addressing comfort and chaos in a beautiful flow of to and fro. ‘Could we assume to live in realms protected,’ Great summary. Wonderful sonnet. Best to you. SuZ

What a scathing message to the complacent you've delivered in the last six lines. Wow, Geoffrey. You wield a razor-sharp penknife, my friend! Kudos, Gershon

Moi! I’m just a pussy cat really, but thanks for the macho booster, Gershon.

Geoffrey, Safe haven's search in a prophetic Sonnet's sigh. Somewhere a somber bell tolls as the pendulum continues its swing. The fragile wings still intact in this write. -Richard
