The Last Unicorn

The Last Unicorn

I was with the last Unicorn
As she drew her last breath
Her horn expelled magic
As she succumbed to her death

The fairies and Gnomes
Each shed a crystal tear
At the thought of a planet
With no unicorns here

Dragons from Lost kingdoms
Came to show their remorse
The moon became unbalanced
In grief shifted off course

A Phoenix from the east
Flying on wings of fire
Tried to revive her
With flames of desire

The oceans all rose
As a show of respect
They waved to her goodbye
A loss difficult to accept

Without the unicorn
Magic shifted to men
It can only now exist
With the stroke of a pen

So poets be the keepers
Of stories new and old
We must not give up on magic
Or this world will grow cold.

One of my favorite movies growning up was 'The Last Unicorn' so I had to read this, so touching with the loss of magic and the final stanza, yes we must keep hope warm~

Absolutely love this enchanting poem Richard. So well written and flows beautifully.I love your rhyme scheme which gives it a great beat, magically on the ear (like your poem) and a great joy to hear as well as to read (as all good poetry should be) Love that last stanza especially the last two lines. We all need a bit of magic in our lives. Loved it. Thank you for sharing. Have a great week. :):)

Ah, yes. Poets can keep so much. Sometimes I've written a poem without a specific meaning but a commenter has found something that isn't there. Was it in my subconscious? I think not. Just shows how we can write A and it is interpreted as B or C. Some nice thoughts here in this one, Richard L. I've enjoyed it.

Sometimes I wish too there were still unicorns fairies and mermaids, mystical creatures of nature, they still live on in our poetic mind and within some of our tales, i really love the flow and cadence of this poem. So beautiful. And the way you’ve phrased things is so intriguing and poetic. I especially liked “ phoenix flying on wings of fire” thats clever and brilliant and how you included “ flames of desire” so fitting for that stanza! Magic yes exists through pen and ink, enjoyed reading ths

Such a intriguing and marvelous write this is! I absolutely love the idea of unicorns, fairies and magic as you've described here.. A world with no hope of unicorns and fairytales is just like a universe with no life... And the ending where you've described the poets as the source of keeping the mystique alive, just beautiful... A very poignant and heartfelt write, hued with delicate emotions.. Absolutely loved reading this!!
