Curly Top

Ouch! Please mommy stop it’s not fair
I pulled on her robe as she pulled on my hair
Halfway through combing out my long curls
mother hurries to get to the other girls
Gentle brushes won’t tame unruly locks now grown
sentimental first hair cut marks a milestone
I never thought I’d cut it off though she’d threat
But too many tangled tears shed for this brunette
It helped to see others face the shears
none were emotional not a pout no fears
It’s graduation for older kids in the neighborhood
on our block mom's a beautician mums the word
The kitchen used as her hair salon,
coloring and stylish up-do’s was right on
The can of Aqua Net sprayed tickled my nose
up next for a cut was my best friend Rose
Quit moving and crying I’m running late,
how 'bout if I cut it up to date
My lips were trembling, yes please do!
I saw ringlets of hair falling, one-two
I was only five and scared to look in the mirror
Why didn’t she just use No More Tears
Short was popular for curly tops, so lickety split
Part it to one side and stick a bow in it

Before she left my Hawaiian mother didn't know what to do with my multiracial hair. So neither did I once she was gone. Was teased until highschool. I used to hate my curls, mostly because it was nothing but frizz due to ignorance in how to care for them. I wore my hair pulled back until my 30s, and flat ironed it for a long time after that. Now that I wish I had them back they hang a lot looser... Wish there had been someone to show me how to care for them when I was younger. Wish my parents hadn't been too disinterested and too proud to ask. It probably would not have taken me so long to appreciate them ;) A lot of wishing lol.

Well aloha FJ, I feel for you, I was self conscious and with a mom beautician, I can't imagine what you went through but I bet you were beautiful with pulled back hair. Ironing left a burnt smell but many were doing it. Balsam was the worst for curly hair frizzies. Large rollers came after, then blowdrying. It was nice reminiscing. Those days were something. You were not alone. Take care!

My mom cut my hair so short when I was a child with long bangs patterned to all mushrooms in the wild. Such a fantastic poem that I extremely enjoyed reading today my dear poet friend Anaya. Warm Congrats on your win! Thanks a lot for sharing this gem. God bless. Hugs

Congrats on 9th place! (see my blog) A very good place to be! This contest was filled with great poems. I smiled to see you have a pic of Shirley Temple. Love that second line. My grandma had a parlor in basement of her home. Aqua Net and No More Tears nostalgic! Nice!

There is a technical issue with the page so I have poetry soup looking into it. Somebody else had a similar problem. Hopefully there will be a fix!

TYVM Kim! I enjoyed your contest. Nostalgic is the curly top in her sailor suit! and hair spray and tangles, lol. The second line was going to be... "It’s graduation for older kids in the neighborhood on our block mom's a beautician mums the word" but i think Ouch! may have got your attention~ You aren't showing up in the contest results/winners section, you may want to check it~ Love, xhugs

Mom knew how to mange your hair. Although youg girls do not want to cut their hair, in modern days it isnot a bad idea.

Dear Anaya, I love how you captured the innocence and vulnerability of childhood, and the mom's hustle as a beautician adds a fun touch. I enjoyed reading this. Best, Anne

A first hair cut can be all those things, definitely a milestone as I added it to the poem. It's nice of you to have enjoyed Anne. Your encouragement is truly appreciated~ xhugs
