As The Dewdrops Slide

Genesis 2

As the dewdrops slide down the tomato Silent thoughts turn to you How you love to plant a garden, eat The fruits, but not a stew God planted a garden for man Man was given a command To tend the grand garden planted Now what happens to the land Husband of mine still tries to tend While scientist still mix Potions to destroy the whole world Then earth they can't fix In the garden, dirt on your hands You are content again Out in the heat, sweat on your skin Will you die out there in pain

This is a very thoughtful poem on the importance of planting one's own food. Too bad so many of our crops are poisoned by chemicals

Andrea, well, I was thinking about chemicals of destruction like bombs. When farmers try to grow huge fields for large populations, they have to use what they have got to fight bugs, plagues, microbes, etc. Someday the earth will be free of the curse, so man won't have to use those things. Sara K

Gardening has always been soothing to me. Something about that dark earth that grounds me. Nicely written Sara. :)

Linda, I have planted and gathered our garden. I would help with the planting, and my husband always prepared the soil. I am not able to do that now. My husband gardens in containers now which are like raised beds so he can sit and plant and tend the plants and then gather them. He gives so much of it away. Thanks for the visit. Sara K

Your poem invokes very nostalgic remembrances in me.... ! I remember the tomato plants with clusters of ripe and raw tomatoes in my mother's kitchen garden. She used to enjoy eating them raw. Some, she used to make into a salad.

Valsa, yes, our parents planted tomatoes in the garden most of the time and ate them in some form. My father did not eat tomatoes because of the fact that he had dentures and the seeds from the tomatoes hurt his gums. He would plant my mother a tomato plant and a pepper plant so she would have them. She put tomatoes in vegetable soup so we all could enjoy the nice acidy flavor of them. Sara K

Why, thank you, Bj, for the nice comments. I can eat fresh sliced tomato, or a cherry tomato just as is, but not very many at one time. I like them in soups, stews, sauces, etc. Amazing in the differences in people of the world. The tomato was once called the love apple, and it has nutrients or enzymes or antioxidants that help improve circulation, etc. so maybe it is the love apple. Sara K

Thank you, Paula. I think a large number of people enjoy tomatoes in so many ways, but probably a huge number of those people have no idea where the sauces, condiments, or tomato slices on the hamburger come from. Sara K

Anne-Lise, thank you for the uplifting review of my work. I don't go to the garden much anymore, but I just shelled about 1/4 of a bushel of black-eyed peas from the garden which I will cook tomorrow. My husband does most of the gardening now. Sara K
