A Good Sense Of Humour Blunts The Sharp Blades Of Reality

Listen to poem:
Written: July 28, 2025, for contest Sponsored by: Natasha L Scragg Quote: "Be full of sorrow, that you may become a hill of joy; weep, that you may break into laughter. The core of the seen and unseen universe smiles, but remember, smiles come best from those who weep." By Rumi ***************** When dyspnea clutches akin to a windless room, and sorrow presses heavily— not merely on the chest, but deep within the scaffold of thoughts— humor, once a fleeting spark, ignites as flint striking steel, a miraculous glimmer emerges amidst the thick fog. In this existence pain is not scarce, but laughter— a lodestone, crafted from flapdoodle tales. and Falstaffian bravado— serves as a balm, not just a distraction, but nepenthe: a sacred numbness with edges that still remember. My life—a palimpsest, inscribed in soot and raw chances— finds footnotes in folly, each chuckle is a testament to courage. I, the steward of fractured hours, have traded tears for joy, and emerged from despair, not through denial, but through the iconoclast’s grin— a fissure in the facade that adumbrates hope. Time becomes horology without hands. When humor wanes— a sockdolager silence where even the apiary hums with mockery I feel a sense of nostalgia. I have been that yokel stone-faced in the storm, my mirth marooned, my jokes are stifled—lost in illeism, I refer to myself. as if I were no longer mine. But even scantling joy can host a grand feast: a pun, a parody, a nefarious, mischievous chuckle at the universe’s absurdity. Among my peers, We wear humor akin to armor— not to conceal, but to celebrate. To declare, we acknowledge the weight, and we bear it, with smiles so sharp, they slice clean, through gargantuan calamity.

Dear Sotto, Congratulations on your success with this majestic work of mammoth proportions. An incisive intelligence argues its case in the form of integrated lines and a vast vocabulary never straying from the points immaculately executed. Humour that pillories absurd preoccupations, yet a panacea for viewing matters in perspective. A titan timeless piece, Howard

Congratulations dear poet on your win in this contest with a superb poem carved with a masterly diction "hors classe, rare and shining imagery and depth of thoughts. Hardly one could imagine behind a facade would lie such depth of sorrow and pains, trading "tears for joy... hope". Wishing that light shines on your life.

LASSAAD my friend, I LOVE this poem, but your final verse encompasses how I completely abide by you and your peers ' we wear humor akin to armor - not to conceal but celebrate'. Humor - 'a fleeting spark ignites as flint striking steel, a miraculous glimpse emerges amidst a thick fog'. So rare is humor that our brain takes some time to recognize humor is present and abounds around at times. Last night we watched an episode of Britain has talent, it was so good and funny I could not stop laughing, nor could Elias, how well we both felt. Between agents coming in and out of our home, which incidentally we sold in the first month, and then packing , which is still is happening - how I HATE IT. Sorry I have been scarce again Lassad, life and living always directs its own course! Blessings, Jennifer.

I love the Rumi quote you chose, my friend. Your poem flowed smoothly as you reveal to us to joy of humor. The end was my favorite lines, "we acknowledge the weight, and we bear it, with smiles so sharp, they slice clean, through gargantuan calamity." Thanks for sharing your knowledge of the value of humor through your poetry. Bill

wow you have such a wide range of vocabulary words, its quite impressive, they are so well placed, and the poem speaks volumes of your courageous heart and how well you handle pain and sorrow. I agree a sense of humor is the best balm for pain, it not only helps the one who uses it, but it lightens the load on those around you too. Commendable dear Sotto

I am lost in the bizarre of strange and uncommon, but choicest words. Dear Lasaad, you are indeed a Wordsmith. This life is full of pain, but humor and laughter are like salt sprinkled on ice to thaw it. "humor, once a fleeting spark, ignites as flint striking steel, a miraculous glimmer emerges amidst the thick fog." So very true. We bear heavy weight, but we acknowledge it with smiles. Fantastic poem on the theme. All the Best, dear friend.

SP, it’s a real honor to read this poem. The power of humor can never be underestimated! The true satirists will never be silenced. As you point out, life is full of difficulties, but being able to focus on our inner smile and find it when needed helps a great deal. I hope everyone can appreciate the value of what you speak! BTW, great video. Full of smiling emotion!!
