Blog Posted:3/18/2014 11:10:00 AM

I spent the weekend just gone on Yorkshires east coast , I visited

all the places I have known and loved my whole life but this time I saw something ugly that I have never seen before and it has forced me to question my love of people , The lads and I called in an Indian take away for a curry and whilst waiting to be served , I heard a couple of young people no older than 20 years old giving the chap behind the counter some real abuse , Making snide comments about Muslims , The fact that the owner was an Hindu completely escaped the stupid young men , I wish I could blame drink or something physical for what I saw and heard but it was no more than pure ignorance , Needless to say that after a very brief discussion with my friends and I , The Bigots left but I am left wondering why we tolerate this kind of behaviour , That shop was full when we walked in yet no one was prepared to do or say anything , Is the change in our attitudes such that we are afraid to get involved anymore ?

Whatever happened to community spirit ? I turn on TV to hear American people being called trailer trash , Are people , Especially children to be given such a label just because they can't afford a three bedroomed house in suburbia ?

I was raised to respect my elders , I would get a right good hiding off of my dad if I gave cheek to the old people in my community but it is common place now to hear of old people being abused by the young , Why ?

I still open a door for a lady and would give up my seat on a bus for a lady to sit down , Men never used bad language in front of a lady , So when did bad manners become acceptable ?

I have five sisters so I'm all for equality , I worship the ground women walk on but if I invite a lady to dinner , I expect to pay and I expect nothing in return , Why oh why do my friends think I'm old fashioned ?

Is the pursuit of money and material things really worth all the sacrifices we are willing to make ?

In Malta We say there is no racism in the year2014, but when I used to go on a bus instead of using my car,if there were two empty seats,One near a muslim with his traditional wear, and the other near an Italian,English etc..People used toavoid sitting near the muslim. Not all maltesers of course...Yes these situations still exist I believe as disrespect exists too.I admire the way you still use what some call old fashion gestures, which in my opinion are nice manners of a true gentlleman : ).Cheers!

In little villages like mine Charmaine . People are pretty decent to each other , Religion , Race , Colour , Rich or poor . We tend to just get along , I'm typical of the folk where I live but life is obviously so much different in the bigger towns and cities.

Unfortunately some people see a muslim and think 'terrorism',some see a catholic and think priests abusing children etc.. This is a sad reality cause each religion and race have both its good and its bad..and even when it comes to human. its the same thing

wow, i really admire the fact that you are such a gentleman as to offer to pay for a lady's lunch or offer her your seat. It's not all that common today. I can't stand bigots, Darren, and I understand the sadness this brings you. about trailer trash, this is more to denote a life style and attitude than actual living arrangements. When those people get up on Jerry Springer show and give lurid details of their many sexual exploits and getting women pregnant, etc. they are showing a style of life that is so repulsive. We should love them but not what they represent. there are many people born into poverty trying to lift themselves out and be their best. They're not trailer trash for me.

Thank you Andrea . I laugh at the Jerry Springer show and some of the more outrageous guests but I wonder how much of it is stage managed ?

Prejudice is here in Canada, too, but I feel it is more hidden, less 'in your face.' This winter I was walking down the street and met up with a fellow WASP. We stopped and chatted about something awful in the news. Her response horrified me. "Those people from that country are like that...they LIKE war." Instead of jumping on her, I reminded her of living conditions, thousands of years of war, hunger, death.. and how lucky we have been to never experience daily terrorism. She started to stutter, walked away. Confrontation can be done in a way that makes a point and yet does not grow the hate. I don't mind bad language, just not in front of my daughter and I happily open doors if someone is right behind me. I am courteous to everyone and when a person, regardless of age, behaves or speaks in a less than kind manner, they do not get my respect, they lose it. An old man who beats his wife, even if he fought in the war, gets no "Yes, sir." from me. I understand your blog... we all feel that there is a degradation of social standards. But the past was not that different. As a mother, I recognize it is my responsibility to raise a child who is respectful... unless respect should be withheld due to cruelty, intolerance or small-mindedness, in which case, I will teach her to speak up for the downtrodden, educate the ignorant and show, through example, what it is to be decent.

Thank you Cyndi . A long and very informative reply . I have no children so it is easy for people like me to be critical , I just hope that if ever I am blessed with children I will want to teach a better way . I certainly don't think a man hitting a woman should be respected , such a man would get no ''YES SIR '' from me either but I admit it is something I've never come across , We'll have to disagree about swearing because I see no need for it in young or old , Certainly in public .

Cyndi, how the heck do you get your comments to be so long?? I got cut off at about exactly the point where my own comment finishes above. How are you able to write way down the box the way you do?

I am so so proud of you, Darren. You are the perfect gentleman. I am with FLO on this...when my daughter marries, she's 19, I hope she finds someone with your set of values. I want to share a quote with you that has been very much circulated in my church group. Hope you like it!

Thank you Eileen , In fairness I have to point out that the people I know who tolerate bad behaviour the least are women , I know a few who are not afraid to stand up for what they believe in but they are '' a few'' Hopefully more men will take heart from their lead.

"The greatest want of the world is the want of men-- men who will not be bought or sold, men who in their inmost souls are true and honest, men who do not fear to call sin by its right name, men whose conscience is as true to duty as the needle to the pole (E White). Yup...MEN who will stand up for what is right, and not be afraid to call people out on their behavior. GOOD FOR YOU, DARREN!

(that's happening around the globe..esp. here in Pinas!) ... whether it's in MRT or bus...girls arestanding while men are seating comfortably.. lol... yes! that's a BIG LOL!!!! ..but that ain't funny at all.... this blog must be read around the world... and hope more people will be enlightened!! ..don't worry.. you're not the only one who practice good deeds.. ^__^ have a great day, DAz!!! :))

AiyaH I don't patrol the neighbourhood rooting out bad behaviour like some super hero but if I think a thing is wrong , I am prepared to say so . We might not change the world but we can certainly change our corner of our community don't you think ?
Date: 3/18/2014 1:38:00 PM
good point, daz.. it seems the young ones are clueless when it comes to basic values in life, and no matter how we teach them, the influence of sensationalized media is taking over, not to mention the attachment to modern technology...i still keep that hope, though... huggs

Thank you nette , Good points , Teachers can help , Perhaps governments too but ultimately it is parents who will lead the way to a better place for us all to share.

And it's so often the laziness of parents to take the time to instill these good values...here anyway. My kids have friends who watch R-rated movies, play mature rated video games, and surf the web like there 's nothing there to corrupt a young mind. My kids ask me why they can't do these things. I tell them "because I'm not a lazy father..."

i am with you here Darren, so sick and fed up of abuse and foul mouthed people. I once wrote to a magazine that was aimed at young teenagers and asked them if the bad language was nessacary in their articles, they wrote back and told me to grow up, kids swear so they did, i politely pointed out that they did not need to encourage them but i didn't get a reply to that. I stopped my boys having the mags xx

Good points and I see what you said as good parenting , I hope I can follow such a lead if ever I'm blessed with children.
Date: 3/18/2014 12:15:00 PM
Well spoken. I have no answers that wouldn't turn into a ramble...but I totally agree with you. It's easy for us to ignore this turn for the worse because we ask ourselves..."what can change it?...what can we possibly do?"...every small step in the right direction helps though...I guess.

I wrote to my MP today and F.J. may well be right , The politicians will just throw my email in the trash but if enough of us do it , They'll be scared to death of losing votes And just maybe , They'll listen .
