Moomoo's Manger Story
MooMoo's Manger Story
by
Joanna Daniel
Let me tell you a story that happened years ago. My ma and da loved to tell us this one, and it holds a special place in my heart as it revolves around my great-great-great-great grandma, MooMoo, after whom I am named. MooMoo and her husband, Majo lived in a small manger in a lovely place called Bethlehem in the city of Jerusalem. Their life was simple enough and they were content. One day, there was a commotion in their manger. A man came with his very pregnant wife and settled down with them. MooMoo was upset about sharing their already little manger with someone else. But somehow Majo pacified her by stating that the pregnant lady had nowhere else to go and if MooMoo were carrying, she too would need some comfortable space. So they shared their hay, and their bed with the man and the lady. That same night, when everyone else was asleep, MooMoo was awakened by some noise. She got up and immediately knew that it was time. Time for the little one to be born. (I guess ladies just know such things). Anyway, she got up and went near the lady to comfort her. Soon, her husband got up and someone came to help with the birth. It was a strenuous 7 hour labour and throughout MooMoo stayed with Mary (that's what the lady's name was). And when her little son was born, he let out a cry, and MooMoo said that she had never seen such a beautiful boy before. She knew at once that He was divine. She bowed down before Him and insisted that Majo too should follow her example. Of course, Majo said that she must follow his example. They both were aware that they had witnessed the world's greatest miracle of Incarnation. Baby Jesus was their Creator and what a joy to share their little manger with HIM! Mary and baby Jesus lay asleep and MooMoo stayed awake guarding them. After some time, MooMoo heard a lot of mooing and baaing and wondered what the commotion was about. She went out and saw the brightest star shining in the sky and some shepherds coming towards the manger with their sheep and cows. Her friend Mabel was one among them. She knew that they all had come to meet their Creator too and happily invited them in. Mary and her husband, Joseph were astonished to see the shepherds worshipping baby Jesus. But wondered even more when they heard them tell about how the angels informed them about baby Jesus being born. Of course, Mabel talked with MooMoo and updated her about the angels singing and praising and how the star showed them the way to the manger. In turn, MooMoo related her experience of the birth of baby Jesus and both stood admiring the Saviour of the world. Soon it was time for Mabel to go. And the shepherds left rejoicing, having seen baby Jesus Christ and His earthly parents. MooMoo was very happy to have been a part of such a beautiful birth. MooMoo and Majo shared this magnificent and magical story with their friends with the greatest enthusiasm and were very popular during that time. Later, they shared it with their calves when they were born. And it was passed on from one generation to the next. And here I am, writing it down so that our coming generations too can revel in our ancestry having seen the birth of baby Jesus. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I still do. It never gets old, you know.
