Shirley, kids mimic what they see. Parents may tell them to be nice, but then they don't treat each other nice. They don't respect their spouse or their kids. Or the kids hear them talk nasty about people at work or on the news. You have to learn to be mean. Same as you have to learn to be nice. Being selfish, I think is innate, but hatred and meanness is learned. Add the anonimity of the internet and people flex their mean muscle to give back to others what they feel has been piled on them. Or, simply to make them feel better they need to belittle others. I think it is a pure sign of weakness and insecurity.

I totally agree, and to be kind you must be open to other's comments and thoughts, and respect other's opinions. Working in hospice teaches a great deal. I think many people assume that if others disagree with what they have said or believe, they are being mean. Being open and honest is the key to kindness. Lee

I think my mom had it figured out. When she died, each of her many grand-children had privately thought that he/she was her favorite. Love, Joyce

A very insightful and sensitive blog. I agree, parents should teach their children, but it is difficult when the parents themselves can play favorites, too. Many times they may not even realize thay are doing it, or the damage it can do to a young child.
