Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

Triolet Contest to be Judged Soon/ How I'll Place Winners

Blog Posted by Andrea Dietrich: 5/15/2019 4:01:00 PM

Just wanted everyone to know: if you did my May Triolet challenge, you will be seeing your placement soon. I decided to use a judging system based on three criteria: 1 to 5 points for sticking to the correct form's rhyme and meter, as well as using good grammar, etc. Another 5 points I assigned according to cleverness and/or use of imagery. A final five points were based on how much I enjoyed the poem! Therefore, a person may have adhered very strictly to the rules, but if the resulting triolet did not enthuse me, it would score lower perhaps than one which was not always exact in meter or rhyme, but which had a very pleasing quality to it.

When I post the many winners, you may notice a few poems that did not use exact rhyme. A few, in fact, used three different rhymes instead of two. I noticed at least two poets who did not understand that the last line needed to be the same as Line 2.  However, I feel these poets simply had probably not used the form before, and therefore, I did not want to disqualify them as long as the resulting poem had a nice quality to it. I accepted up to 10 syllables per line, but had to eliminate one person who used 12 to 16 syllables per line. Even if this person had been consistent, more than 10 syllables is just too many syllables for a triolet!

I have one clear winner who garnered 13.5 points from me out of a total of 15. In case you are interested, here is a list of the themes chosen listed by popularity:

1. Lily of the Valley: or similar flower: this theme beat out the others at a count of 10

2. Emerald came in second with nine poems, though different aspects of emerald, some being the color, others being the gem itself and some that dealt with nature.

3. Dear old Mom got eight poets inspired!

4. Taurus and Five had two of each written. I quite enjoyed all of those!

5. Three triolet were a hodgepodge of the above themes!

I really enjoyed reading all your poetry! Hope to announce the placements soon!

Thank you so very much, Buddy, I truly enjoyed this form and I'm so happy with my placement! This is my first Triolet, and I hope to write many more, as it was quite enjoyable and rewarding. I am humbled and honored to be on a list with such wonderful writers, and that my first attempt was a successful one. Blessings! :-) <3

I wanted to see when you first came to Soup, and I realized you are not quite as new as I thought. You have been here a year now. I'm glad to be getting to know more about you now.

I find some forms work for distinct things better than others. For some reason, when I see a really good movie scene, I have often been inspired to write a triolet. They work really well to reinforce a line that comes to my mind about the scene! Then I rhyme that line with a few others. It's a cute little form for something like that.

Have you not tried triolet before? Now maybe you will be encouraged to do more! From what you had told me about your not liking them, I did not expect to see you as the one who wrote that winning poem!!

Congrats to everyone. I just went through and made comments to all those who participated. Please soupmail me if you care to know my reasoning on your placement. I like for people to understand how I reason things out. Also, what is important to me when judging is not always the same thing that other judges care about so much. In any event, there were a lot of beautiful gems in my contest. Thank you!
