The Hands Of A Poet

Blog Posted by Brenda Atry: 5/12/2011 1:35:00 PM
I have often felt that when writing or painting, an energy or source other than my own, flows through my hands.

I was at the Museum of Modern Art several weeks ago, contemplating the Black Paintings of Ad Reinhardt. I felt the need to describe the blackness on paper, in words. At times I have sketched, and the lines were drawn without my conscious pressure on the pencil.

Have any of you had that same experience?

I have a favorite sculpture at the Portland Museum of Art. It is a bunch of burned phone books placed on the wall so it looks like you are walking a stair way to heaven. When looking at it from a distance you can see the cross in the corner of it. When standing in front of it you can not see the cross. Just goes to show that everything has multiple perceptions, cory

I have had the same experience that Elaine describes. It's as if someone else has written the words, and that I'm reading them for the first time, and go "wow! where did that come from?"

I have many times written poetry, that I had to read after its completion to know what (I?) had written. Lainie

I wish that were true more often for myself. I have to think long and hard for much of what I write, but on occasion it flows wonderfully!

i am a painter, brenda... i understand what you mean.. somehow , when this inner, raw source takes over, there's no stopping it.. i ahve done some pieces and when i look at them after some time ( articles, poems, speeches, paintings, interior designs, etc).. i ask myself: " did i do that?" i wish i could always touch and tap this inner resorvoir.. we all have it! :) adorable blog! :) huggs

Have you ever tried to touch your poem? I was unconsciously doing it when writing Dusk. My husband was watching me touch the air in front of me as if it was the image. I needed the tactile experience to find the correct words that I was searching for. Has that happened to anyone here?

When it's time for poetry I feel I have to release the restlessness in me. When I take a picture my eyes physically have a higher pressure and I have to press that button on the camera.

Do you feel that we all are capable experiencing the same things, but interpreting it in different ways?

I feel the same thing in a different way, Brenda. Inspired energy from my inner subconscious being speaking mysteries that my concept mind does not yet understand. These mysteries are soon thereafter revealed unto my conscious mind. Agape, Moses

Brenda, this is new to me. Yes, I feel inspiration, but not a source of energy that flows through my hands. Are you familiar with the concept of "Automatic Writing"? Author Ruth Montgomery claimed another spirit guided her through her writing. Very interesting blog. Best wishes, Carolyn
