Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

Sandwich Day. YUM! (and two others)

Blog Posted by Andrea Dietrich: 11/4/2010 10:09:00 PM
Sorry, guys, I missed yesterday's two holidays. First I will talk about TODAY'S holiday, King Tut Day. It is the day that marks the discovery of King Tut's tomb in Egypt. The "child king" of Egypt ruled from age 9 to 19 over three thousand years ago. Whether he died by murder or by accident is still not known. His tomb was discovered Nov. 4, 1922.

Yesterday's  holidays seemed more interesting to me. One of them  is Housewife's Day. Even the name "housewife" sounds so old-fashioned these days. LIke they say, "Does that mean you are married to the house?" These days it seems very sad to me that even a woman who WANTS to stay home can not really afford to do it. For the poor family or even the middle class family with children, unless the husband is making a good salary, the woman is almost sure to have to work as well, either part-time or full-time, just to make ends meet. I know my daughter and her husband struggle with their little family (three children) and she tries to be a good mommy, cutting hair out of her house and working at a beauty parlor a few times a week. There are not many choices for a woman with very young children. Often they do not make a good wage, so how will it benefit them to pay money to a sitter? I honestly cannot understand how a single woman with children can ever make a go of it without a good paying job! In my opinion, there should be a "Working Mother's day" to honor the poor women forced to work when they would much rather stay hime with the kids!

Finally, my favorite holiday today is Sandwich Day.  I recall reading a story many years ago about the Earl of Sandwich, a man in England who loved gambling. He is credited with inventing the sandwich in 1762 when he had someone bring him meat between two pieces of bread because he was hungry but did not want to leave the gambling table. I am not sure how accurate that story is, but it sure makes for an interesting account!  On the day of this "historical" moment, I ask you: What is your FAVORITE sandwich. And if you go into a Subway's, which sandwich do you usually choose? I like beef, but for some reason, I often end up buying the tuna sub, garnished with lettuce, onions, spinach leaves and povolone cheese. Of course, nothing can beat an all-American burger, loaded with toppings like bacon, mushroom, onions or cheese. And my own homemade burgers are the best! So tell me, what is YOUR best sandwich!!

Hurray for King Tut! And I'm so glad you didn't let Housewife's Day go unmentioned, Andrea. There are a lot of people who don't understand how much work goes into being a homemaker. Did you see "Mr. Mom"? My favorite sandwich is the Philadelphia Cheese Steak from Subway. Yummy and quite nutritious if loaded with veggies. Love, Carolyn

Wonderful info Andrea... I don't consider myself a 'normal' housewife but a working one instead..as working from home with hubby as boss is more than a housewife... Ron is the cook in our home now and he makes a mean "hoagie" which is a glorified sandwich.. Italian style..haha... I don't eat sandwiches but I do like veggie wraps or veggie pitas .. white bread is so full of calories luv... happy weekend..
