Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

In Need of Clarification on putting info underneath poems

Blog Posted by Andrea Dietrich: 2/4/2024 9:09:00 AM

Quite a while back, Poetry Soup made a new rule for us to put all extra informatiion about our poem into the box above our poems. I am assuming this means references to Howmanysyllables.com, which is unnecessary for people to tell me in my ccontests anyway, as well as any cute little notes; for example, who or what inspired the poem.

I knnow TeamPoetrySoup mentioned this quite a while ago, but I do need clarification about a few other things. What if you have used lines that are not your own. Shoulden't they be referenced by an asterick below the poem? Some poets have contests in which lines of other poems or songs are used in our poetry. Common sense tells me it should be ok to allow these things to be added beneath one's poem. I guess I will take this up with PoetrySoup. In the meantime, I stated in my Sijo rules the following: "Do not put anything underneath your entry or it will be immediately disqualifed. Everything extra should go in the box above your entry. Unlike Constance, I do not want to see a quote above your sijo since the sijo is just a short form, making quotes unnecessary." Because I stated this rule in my challenge, I feel I have to stick by it.. However, I was not so foreceful in what I said about quotes above an entry, so I will let that slide today if anyone did it.

One poet asked me why we can't reference things underneath our poetry, such as words or lines which are not our own. I hope PoetrySoup was not referring to things like that. Does anybody know what Soup said in their original blog about these new rules? I plan on asking this question personally to TeamPoetrySoup today.

Yes Iv noticed some also mention which contest poems were previously entered and placements that they received. Which I am not sure if i should let that slide when judging for like my “NA” contest?

At the time (some months ago) I had asked TPS specifically about "Inspired by ..." as my one poem that I entered for the anthology did not make much sense without it as the picture and description of the art piece will be lost (posted in the notes section). Their answer was that nothing other than poems in the text box, unless it is part of the poem. I'm still figuring out what it means and stick to the rules in the red box that appears above the text box when you prepare your poem for Submission. Also, on the contest page, the rules are prity clear. BTW it looks as though TPS has updated the introduction to the contest page ...

I guess you answered the question for me. I just find it very odd not to be able to attribute certain lines to another author as I once did with an asterick. Well, rules are rules. thanks, Suzette.

Lastly: words of songs, titles of songs, direct quotes, etc are usually written in quotation marks (as I did in my latest poem), and notated, then accredited (usually as a footnote) in either the notes section or in the first comment block. Yes, sponsors can't see this, but it needs to be clarified by the sponsor as it is not my domain .. Goodnight (it is getting for 8:30 here).
