SHOW not TELL always is POETRY done WELL

An imagist always strives tp keep things simple, particularly ,sensory details.

Image” that is..

 a unique instant of time..

the presentation of which gives..

a sense of sudden liberation..

a sense of freedom from time ... and space ..

that sense ..

... experienced in the presence of a works of art..

unrepeatable..... tangible to the moment..

as the saying has it     

   .to present one Image in a lifetime is better  than  volumes of wordplay

because

SHOW DON'T TELL is always poetry done well,no matter the form.

  ....to show rather than tell       is the key to true imagist poetry

,sadly.     much English language hi-ku have words to avoid ,

...like  'as'&'to' & also too often use past tense verbs 

& thus the verse becomes  ' imagery ' rather than imagist

(a subtle difference)

but so important.. yet so often a major flaw in hi-ku & many other forms

by emphasising  'telling' rather.. ..than .....letting their 'words' alone. show 

 

 

...one form alone  illustrates & solves this difficult dilemma & irresistible urge to tell

the classic image form combinest the  hiku (3 lines) to show &

the attached couplet thereon ... to tell

 

...to amplify this key watchword in literature why not read more thereon ....

Brian, thanks for the informative blog, I try to do the show and tell idea, sometimes I get it and sometimes I fail, but I will keep working on it, I think all haiku and senyru should be written in the moment, never past tense, and of course haiku be only about nature and senryu only about humanity, I find so many cannot get that concept, peace _Constance

Yes Constance it does rather separate the wood from trees so to speak..but it is the key to ..poetree
