Caryl Muzzey
(Click for Poet Info...)

I was born in Leavenworth, KA in 1950 and lived in Valley Falls, KA on my grandparents' dairy farm until I was five years old.  I am the 3rd of 5 children.  I am now living in Aabama and have 2 children and 3 grandchildren with one more on the way and have been married for 33 challenging and very content years.

I have always been very passionate about writing, especially poetry.  My love for writing began at the age of 14.  I wrote a poem about John F. Kennedy and sent it to Mrs. Kennedy.  In reply, Mrs. Kennedy sent me a black and white photo of the family in front of their church doors; this kind gesture was quite an honor for me and I believe that was what started me to pursue poetry in greater depth.

Writing is my first passion, my second passion is art.  I have always loved art but never took lessons.  Just like poetry, it was a gift, a passion; I acquired from my mother and she from her mother.  When I married, I stopped drawing but did not stop writing.  In 2006, I was diagnosed with stage 3 / 4 breast cancer; after my mastectomy, chemo treatment, and radiation; I had a dream which prompted the poem, "My Most Awesome Paranormal Experience" to go back and draw again.  When I'm not writing, I'm drawing for grandkids or some member of the family, someday I will draw for myself.  I would love to paint but my mastectomy prevents me from stroking with a brush; however, I do use colored pencil some but mostly graphite and pointillism.  I am a member of CPSA (Colored Pencil Society of America).

When I joined Poetry Soup, I was looking for challenges and I found it here; lots of challenges!  I am a realistic artist as well as a realistic writer.  I write on real events or something that triggers a memory, emotion, or I place myself in another person's shoes and write what I feel they are thinking.  I pretend to have a good sense of humor too and try to use it at every opportunity.

Yes, it is nice to see all of y'all too. This picture was taken two years ago. I was trying to get my daughter to get a facebook profile picture of me and my youngest grandson, two then, came up to me and said "hold you". That was all it took to melt my heart. I really haven't changed much. I'll try to get my favorite drawings posted sometime for those who want to view. Thanks Cyndi for the heads up (spell check does not check grammer usage)and kind remarks; I am the lucky one to know so many wonderful writers on the soup. Caryl

Nice to see ya on the blogs, Caryl. And I read your bio, and I feel so lucky that you are a part of soup. A creative thinker-doer who has a great sense of humour and a positive outlook on life, regardless of the curveballs life has tossed your way. Your sense of humour shines, and my own strange wit smiled when I read your bio.. you wrote "jester" instead of "gesture" and I grinned, thinking, suits! :-) Sorry you can not paint, NOT FAIR, but glad you have found an outlet with your pencils. Do you have any of your pictures on line? I'd love to see them. Hmmm. D'oh. Should have checked your blog first, she says sheepishly. Will do now, Cheers hugs and happy weekend to you, Cyndi

It is so nice to see you here, Caryl...I'm happy too to read more about you in your wonderful biography! What a meaningful and inspiring story to hear of your poem being read by Mrs. Kennedy, and her generous gift in reply. How thrilling that must have been to receive such a keepsake. Congratulations on the coming birth of a new grandchild...(I too have 5...what a joy!). Good luck with the lab...we have a golden lab, and they are "high energy" dogs...but so loving! Best wishes, and post some photos of your art sometime, perhaps?? Love, Carrie

Caryl, your four grandchildren must keep you very busy. Congratulations on your third grandson! It seems many of the poets here are gifted in other areas of the arts. I used to draw portraits when I was younger and have been involved in theater my whole life. No one can possibly spend all their time on Poetry Soup. I enjoyed reading your bio. Imagine the joy of getting a response from Mrs. Kennedy. The monetary value would be high, but the real value is knowing she thought enough of your poem to respond. An honor indeed! Have a great holiday season with your growing family, Caryl. Love, Carolyn
