Cyndi Macmillan
(Click for Poet Info...)

Cyndi MacMillan lives in a small town in Ontario that is home to North America’s largest working waterwheel. Her writing has appeared in notable Canadian literary journals and local newspapers.

A Cruel Light is her debut gothic mystery (4/4/2023). She has been a Jill-of-all-trades, but for as long as she can remember, she has dreamt of being a novelist.  Hard work and the wonderful team at Crooked Lane Books have made that dream a reality.  Please note that her husband and daughter kindly keep her coffee mug filled when she is wrestling with a suspenseful chapter.   During a pandemic lockdown, the family adopted a rescue cat who chirps.

When not writing, Cyndi enjoys reading Gothics, scrapbooking, and losing horribly at board games.  Works-in-progress include the second (and third) Annora Garde Mystery, a Canadian noir series, and a standalone horror mystery, so more often than not, Cyndi is writing.  She is a member of Crime Writers of Canada.

A WRITER'S DREAM COME TRUE

Blog Posted by Cyndi Macmillan: 7/19/2022 7:17:00 AM

Well, my book is available for preorder, though it doesn't have a cover yet, and  the title hasn't been finalized.  (Though I believe the likelihood is that we will keep 'Dirty Little Secret')

Over the next few weeks, the book designer will be crafting my jacket, and those with NETGALLEY memberships will be able to read my book for free (with the hope/expectation that they will review my work and vote on my cover.)

It's an exciting but nervewracking time for me.  We hear "Don't judge a book by it's cover" but readers absolutely get a first impression by a novel's cover art.

My ARCs won't be ready til late fall, and I have tons of promoting work to do between now and spring.  Meanwhile, I am hard at work on my second mystery and I feel poetry's pull daily.

As soon as my cover is ready to be revealed, I'll share it with you all.  I'm looking forward to my book being reviewed by Publishers Weekly, Kirkus, and bestselling authors, but I'm also nervous too.

If you'd like to read my blurb or preorder my book:

Life is still crazy busy--parenting, working outside the home, promoting my first book, trying to keep the laundry pile from leaping on me like 'The Blob.'  I'm also working on my second mystery as I try not to obsess about my cover!

So, I'd thought I'd ask soupers, what covers of books have you really loved?  What covers of books have you hated?  (I prefer most original covers and I don't really like movie tie-ins).
Feel free to share a title of a book.  I want to see what you like!  Happy writing everyone. :)

Regarding your cover. Colour is usually dictated by the genre. Like food on a blue or black plate looks anemic, yellow or green makes it pop. Seeing as you are going to write future novels (in the same genre, I presume) it would be an idea to investigate a set theme to be followed through to the other publications. A good graffic designer would be worth his weight in gold at this planning stage. You might also Google the psychology behind the jacket design and the latest trends. I personally prefer minimalistic design for my books and the covers and titles tie in with the contents. Keep us posted. :))
