Like many others, I write to fill an inner need, rather than an expectation of success or acclaim. In my writing, I strive to work and craft an idea or thought in a new way, sometimes achieving something worthwhile, other times failing miserably. Constructive comments are greatly appreciated and honest compliments gratefully accepted.

Does posting a poem in the Soup constitute publication?

Thanks to all, it was/is as I thought. And yes this was well outside my dreams of avarice. Perhaps if the noodle were 'el dente' we could come up with something flagrant but that might contravene the Soup's pure language code.

I submitted a poem I had posted on soup to a local poetry contest - I did ask for clarification of 'publication' and they replied they did not consider soup as being 'published' - its definitely a grey area :-) hugs Jan xx

This was the poetry society on the Isle of man and all entries in the contest were published in a proper paperback book - we all had to sign the fly leaf of one book they kept behind the counter in the bookstore - was a great honour to see the poem in print:-) hugs jan xx

yes, it all depends on the publisher. I prefer smart publishers like the one you went to, who have good sense!

The best, and only legally binding, definitionof "publishing" is in the instructions of US Libraryof Congress Form PA, which is what we use to register copyrights, The short answer to you actual question, however, is, simply, "Yes." However, most publications have their own guidelines they use.

Like Craig says, it's all a very silly silly game. I detest this thing that publishers do. It's not like many people are reading our poems, especially when they scroll out of sight within a day or two. Good grief. Just learn to outwit the system. What can they do if they catch you sending in a poem already seen by a few people? Whip you with a wet noodle?
