Meeting

Snow is falling, snow is falling
All around me in a whirl
And yet, though it’s blinding
My eye’s fixed on a pretty girl

But I doubt she’s even noticed me
And who could blame her
For, alas, to beauty…
What could the beast offer?

She’s standing there, on the corner
Across the street in the storm
She’s nibbling her lips nervously
Trying best to keep warm

She’s no mittens on her hands
She’s no boots on her feet
So I see her, as she awaits the light
Into her coat, retreat

And as I make out her image
As I try not to stare
The melted snow is sparkling
As dewdrops in her hair

And she wraps a scarf ‘round her now
Concealing, most, her smile
But like a spark in the dark
Her eyes captivate me all the while

Snow is falling, snow is falling
Soon it will bury the world, deep
But I’ll still be warm, oh how!
As, with me, her image I’ll keep

For she’s penetrated me!
And with consummate art
She’s filled in the holes in the walls
Of my broken heart

For her modest, humble features
Oh, how they do entrance
As all about her now
The snowflakes spin and dance

And as my heart was paper thin
Now it’s as thick as concrete
As building up in me is courage
With each and every beat

But what is my chance?
Alas, ‘tis rejection I most fear
Than to come between us
Only a frontier

But how it’s redoubled now
Now, as the traffic slows
And now, there’s the light
And so, now, here goes
