I Cannot Say

I cannot say how much you make me feel
How much those heavy eyes do make me light
An airy weightless stirring in my soul
A passion near intense I’ll never have
I know you feel it too but you won’t speak
There’s nothing to be said it’s plain to see

I cannot say how much it makes me ache
To know how painful spirit love can be
Between two bodies yearning to be one
A foolish dream, I know, but nonetheless—
How can I bear to think these hopeless thoughts
Of loving you with nothing else but this?

I cannot say how helpless I must seem
To some great god of love who’s smitten me
With wants of love I’m destined not to make
Your secret warmth and softness I’ll not know
Too close, of course, but never close enough
And close enough, of course, will never be
