Beginning of the End

I remember it, that night we crashed into fate and saw defeat,
Thinking back it was your doorway light that filled my mind,
Because it was under that light that I took a seat and watched us burn,
And the funeral was nice so I said "goodbye" and "I'll see you soon",

That night both our heads hung low,
And even though it was 75 it still felt cold,
Because minutes passed without a word,
And for us silence was all we had,

And as I turned to leave you asked me quick,
"we'll be friends, won't we still?",
I said "Of course" but you stared in disbelief,
Your eyes filling with my obvious insincerity,

So then I turned and took the steps I never thought I'd have to take,
And I left before you could see the tears leave my face,
Six months later and I still see you as I saw you then,
Standing there beneath your doorway light, a lone figure in the night.
