An Innocent Omen
I drive my route over the bridge.
I see a small figure sit in the street,
staring me down.
A black puppy glares at me.
I swerve away from the tiny life
that could end mine.
My white semi smashes into useless railings,
and lunges over the ledge of the gray bridge.
Dangling by wires and grinding metal,
hearing tires screech and metal morph.
I catch my breath.
Searching for an escape,
I hear shouts and cries from above.
I climb out of the truck and grab the wire.
Snap… and I fall back in the truck.
Another wire becomes visible and within reach.
It guides me to the rough rocky road.
Allofasudden, the wire snaps.
Allofasudden, the trailer falls.
Allofasudden, a hand hoists me up.
I am safe.
