Darkness

A pale moon rises above the windowsill
Throwing its pale glow against the blue wooden floor
Arching up, the only way to see it, I behold something magical

A dark shadow grows upon the ground
Trees and fences and tall grass all cast it
The shadow goes on as far as the eye can see

The tree line separates the darkness into two
The lighter upon the ground, the darker within the trees themselves
Almost indistinguishable they are

Faint glows from distant houses shine weakly through the darkness
They seem to twinkle between the trees and their branches
They paint the darkness as the stars paint the black sky

A weak summer breeze blows through the trees, shaking loose leaves
The leaves fall, fall, fall to the ground
Guided so steadily by the wind

Dogs, cats, birds, and other creatures of the day sleep peacefully
As the creatures of the night bustle with activity
Flying, buzzing, crawling, slithering, all moving very quickly

Dark shadows from the creatures move in majestic streaks against the ground
The shadow of an overhead owl can be seen moving straight and far
While the shadows of the smaller ones seem to dance about

The sky, so black, is illuminated only be the stars that are contained within it
Stars, so beautiful, forming constellations of all shapes and patterns
Patterns recognized for thousands of generations before now

Orion the Warrior, The Taurus, Ursa Major, Ursa Minor,
The Scorpion, Pieces, Aquarius, Sagittarius,
Capricorn, Gemini and many, many others

All known from a past so long ago
To see them now is too look into the past
To feel as those in the past felt as they peered into the night sky

An unawareness and secrecy is formed from these thoughts
A feeling easily compared to the darkness
Unknown and magical it will always be
