I Cried Because

Preschool
I cried because
A bigger kid
Knocked over the castle
I’d built
Kindergarten
I cried because
Somebody stole
The chocolate bar
I’d brought
First grade
I cried because
The teacher yelled at me
It wasn’t even for something that
I’d done
Second grade
I cried because
I fell off
The top of
The tree that
I’d climbed
Third grade
I cried because
My friend left me for
The new girl
I didn’t know if it was something that
I’d said
Fourth grade
I cried because
My friend was getting bullied
But then they stopped because
I’d stood up for him
Fifth grade
I cried because
We did a group project
I had to do all the work
And my group took all the credit
For something that
I’d done
Sixth grade
I cried because
My parents wouldn’t listen
I told my friend that if they didn’t
I’d run
Seventh grade
I cried because
I wanted to apologize
So I’d ran
I’d gotten to
The bus stop
Where he was supposed to
Wait but he hadn’t
I cried because
My best friend said
She didn’t want to be
My friend anymore
I cried because
I was in a contest
But I was not sad
When I cried
I did not lose
I’d won
And I’d cried.

A Poem For Jake

Hey, how are you
We don’t talk much
Well I talk, but you?
Not much
I’ve known you for
A while
Since sixth grade
When my bus was late
And I came in
One seat left
We passed papers back
I turned around
And there you were
I froze inside
Flash forward to the fire drill
Where the high schoolers
Screamed weird things
At us
We didn’t talk for a while
After that
But I admired you
From afar
Your bravery
Intelligence
Sports skills
Which I’ll always lack
And kindness
You always were very kind
Last year, we did talk
A lot, in fact
After school almost
Every day
Then we didn’t
This year we only have
A few classes together
And I think that’s how
It’ll stay but
It’s fine
I’ll just notice how
You walk into first hour
Just a little late
Because of clean-up crew
And how you sit in the back
In seventh hour
The teacher made you move
And how you talk to your friends
And don’t notice me
Because you’ll always be you
And I’ll always be me.

What It Is

People ask
What is middle school?
I know exactly, precisely
What it is.
Middle school is a game.
It’s a game of tag
When someone’s tired of
Being the “it” person
They tag someone else
That’s what it is
It’s a game of peek-a-boo
Hoping to peek at that someone
The same time they peek at you
That’s what it is
It’s a game of cops and robbers
We’re the robbers; teachers, cops
We try to not get caught
That’s what it is
It’s a game of kickball
If you don’t kick hard enough,
You’re out.
That’s what it is
It’s a game of hide and seek
Trying to find the best spot
And stay there as long as you can
That’s what it is
It’s a game of bingo
Waiting for the right thing
And then it’s your lucky day
That’s what it is
It’s a game of soccer
You run past the defense
And kick into the goal
I know exactly what middle school is.
It’s a game, and that’s
What it is.

Nerves

It was the night of
The first seventh grade
Band concert
I had to play the timpani
For the last song.
I was terrified that
I would mess up
Everybody would hear
Nobody would forget
I looked at the first person
Who came into my mind.
I didn’t know why.
I thought he was irritating
And I’d never thought about him
Before that night.
I guess he had a case of the nerves like me,
Because of the fact that
He
Looked
Back at me.

I Have Two Loves

I have two loves
And I can't decide
Which one to pick

One love is
My boyfriend
I asked him out
Last Wednesday
He's funny
Awkward
Cute
A complete gentleman
And loves music
We can laugh about anything
And we walk together
Every morning
He knows that I
Play baseball with
My brother
But something's not right
To have this love, I must
Forget my best friend.

The other love is
A love I shouldn't have
He's athletic
Smart
Quiet
And unbelievably sweet
We share smiles across
The classroom
He helps me open my locker
And when I'm alone
He comes and sits by me
He knows that I
Love to bake and cook
Even when omlettes catch on fire
But something's not right
This love is also
One of the loves of
My closest friend.

I have two loves.
J and O.
Which one to choose?
You make the choice
Please
So I don't have to.

Shaking Hands

I was in an essay contest
It started in January
When we wrote our rough drafts.
Then the teacher paired us
Up for peer editing.
I was paired with
A boy with sapphire eyes.
When he read my essay, I had
Shaking hands.
He couldn’t find anything
In my essay
For me to fix.
A few weeks later,
I was the finalist.
With shaking hands, I told the sapphire boy
That I was a finalist
Because the day it was announced,
He was gone.
Seven people told me before
I got to language arts so
I already knew when I got there.
Flash forward to a Wednesday night.
I’m nervous, with shaking hands
I email a friend,
Asking if they’ll come
To the oratory contest.
The friend said no.
An hour later, I was on the stage
Shaking hands, I placed them on
The podium.
I read my essay, and left the stage.
Less than 20 minutes later, they
Called all fourteen finalists to the stage
Again.
We got our gift baskets
And then it was time to
Announce the winners.
Shaking hands again.
Third,
Second.
Then, I was first.
I danced all the way home.
The next day at school,
I found the sapphire boy during
Fourth hour.
With shaking hands, I told him that we won.
He was happy, but he
Was angry too.
He hadn’t received any credit.
The next day I bought him a
Carnation.
I didn’t sign my name on the note, but
I wrote on the back
With shaking hands,
This is your credit.

Crush

Turning around on the
First day to pass
A paper back and
Your heart just freezes
He’s so freaking gorgeous.
Tripping and falling and
Crashing into someone then
Looking up to see
Bluer than blue eyes.
Smiling across the room
Hoping he’ll smile back
And he does, so
You smile for hours.
Random pairing up in
Language arts class and
Wow, he’s really cute.
Worrying about the crutches
So asking him if
He’s alright, and then
Over the weeks, you
Slowly realize that you
Actually really like him.
Meeting at trivia club
And being on the
Same team as someone
Who becomes your best
Friend and then eventually
Becomes your best crush.

You, I, We

You come into school
And walk with your friends
You go to first hour
And talk with your friends
I come into school
And walk to class late
I come to first hour
And start working
You put in your earbuds
And smile as your favorite song plays
I put on my headphones
And look over at you
We’re doing the same thing
Lip-syncing and hoping nobody sees
The bell rings
I walk to language arts
You walk to science
Months later, you walk into school
You go to first, second, third
I walk into school
Go to first, second, third
I walk into fourth hour
And sit down
You walk into fourth hour
And sit down
I turn around
You look forward
And wow
You have really blue eyes
And mine are matching
We act out a scene
And go to lunch
I sit down and open my lunch
You get in line and buy pizza
You finish your lunch
I finish mine
We both look up
And our eyes meet
We get up
And go to the snack line
I buy a double chocolate cookie
You buy some Doritos
And we return to our seats
We return to playing our parts
In a play called life
And soon what happens
You forget
I forget
We forget.

The Boy With the Crutches

The Boy With The Crutches
It was a Tuesday
In February
A boy came to school on crutches
That he didn’t have
The day before.
I panicked, because I
Didn’t know
What happened.
That day, after school
I did my homework,
Ate my dinner,
And then I got on my laptop.
I played games until
I remembered
The boy with the crutches.
I emailed him, to ask if he was OK.
He replied within 30 seconds.
Even though he’s better now,
I will always remember him
As
The boy with the crutches.

Paper People

Science says that
People are made of cells
Of bones and blood and brains
But I say different
People are made of paper
They bend at other’s will
And change their colors easily
They start out different colors
But can be changed to
Look the same
They can be folded
And trimmed
To be perfect
Or at least look it
And all the paper people
Have something
Somewhere
Someone
That can tear them in half
And something
Somewhere
Someone
Who can tape them back together.
People are made of paper.
