October Etheree

Leaves,
Fallen,
Autumn’s hues,
Spread on the ground,
Bright carpets of leaves,
Autumn’s colours delight,
Glow in soft autumnal light,
Making such a beautiful sight,
Catch it quick while October is here,
As November brings winter ever near.

Iggy, My Bearded Dragon

In my house there is a monster,
Who’s growing every day,
He’s usually quite happy,
In his own reptilian way.
He often watches TV,
He doesn’t care which side,
He really looks quite funny
When his mouth is open wide.
It cools him off when he is hot
He does it all the time,
Locusts are his favourite treat,
He eats them up just fine,
He munches and he crunches them,
It‘s quite a sight to watch,
But even more fascinating
Is when he makes a catch.
He might be multi-coloured,
With prickles on his tough skin,
His spiky beard can blacken,
And he makes a right old din,
I love my friendly monster,
Not everyone can say,
They have their very own dragon
To play with every day.

A Visit To a Zoo

Zebras are stripy I’m sure you can see,
Yaks chewing cud as slow as can be,
X-ray tetra in the aquarium are seen,
Warthogs with curly, white tusks that gleam,
Vertebrates aplenty, some invertebrates too,
Usually are seen at a visit to a zoo.
Tapirs with their long funny noses,
Slithering snakes in glass fronted enclosures,
Roaring tigers with camouflage stripe,
Quizzical otters eat eggs that they like,
Puma black prowls through the bush,
Orange orangutans needing a brush.
Never one to refuse a tasty dish
Macaroni penguins smell of fish,
Lions in the sunlight all day sleeping,
Komodo dragons quietly creeping,
Javan Rhinoceros with skin like armour,
Indian elephants size makes such drama,
Hippos with their mouths open wide,
Galapagos tortoise, oh what a prize!
Fennec fox with really long ears,
Endangered animals that people fear,
Dangerous animals taking a nap,
Caiman and crocodile waiting to snap,
Bold zoo keepers picking up poo,
All able to be seen at a trip to the zoo.

The Dishwasher - a Tribute To a Major Appliance Poetry Contest

I really love the dishwasher
And so does Mum and Dad!
We filled it after every meal,
Until one day I heard a squeal!
Water had poured all over the floor
But hadn’t made it under the door!
Until the appliance was in the pink
Dishes were washed in the sink.
That really was not much fun,
It’s fair to say it was none!
Dishwashers can break in a blink
But it’s so much better than using the sink!

Lessons Learnt In Life

Work,
Focus,
Be your best,
Try harder still.
My teacher tells me
Reading improves the mind.
Why is that I ask myself,
In tables tests I must do well,
Preparing for spelling tests each week,
It’s all in preparation for high school.
I’ll never use algebra out of school,
PE’s a total waste of my time,
I’ll never need my tables too,
I’ll never need to read time,
Graphs will be out you see,
My Dad disagrees,
These I may need,
No I plead,
Never
Used!

I wrote this poem on 30th September 2015. It's about what I'm told at my primary school by my teacher and how frustrating and useless some of the things I have to learn really are. I'm sure I'll never need things like algebra when I grow up and leave school but I still have to learn it. Even though it's really difficult! Dad says he uses things like algebra almost every day but I hope that's not true! I actually like school it's just that some things I learn feel a bit of a waste of time and I'd rather do the things I enjoy. Mum says you have to do the bad bits to appreciate the good ones. I'm not so sure about that either!

Pasta

Pasta comes in lots of colours, in many shapes and sizes,
Each one does a different job, in several different guises.
The smaller the pasta used in a soup the lighter it will be,
It’s used to fill your tum, when you eat it you’ll agree.
Pasta sheets make lasagne, both vegetable and meat,
Quickly bringing families to the table to eat.
Spaghetti is a favourite too, of that you will agree,
It’s used in Bolognaise, one of my favourites for tea.
Macaroni is a favourite household American dish
Mac and Cheese recipes people think are delish.
Pasta can be filled with yummy food to eat,
Mushroom, cheese or vegetable parcels really are a treat.
Flour, eggs and water makes a perfect pasta,
Beetroot puree makes it red and squid ink turns it blacker,
Orange is made by adding lots of tomato puree
If you want it green, spinach makes it groovy!
If you make pasta at home roll it very thin
Fun to make, it hopefully won’t land up in the bin!
Whether long or short, tubes, shapes or frills
We all agree that pasta has all the skills
To make us eat our meals much faster
So come on mum, bring on the pasta!

Period

Playtime at school everyone knows is called a play period.
Every time I do something bad my mum says “it’s only a period”.
Relaxation time between sports is my best rest period.
I use full stops at sentence ends, I’ve learnt that’s also a period.
Oh I didn’t realise the importance of each period!
Do you think it will be long before I’m allowed a lengthy period?

I'M a Great Crested Newt

I must state
That I am great,
I have a crest,
I’m simply the best.
Oh yes – I’m a Great Crested Newt!

I am brownish black,
With warts all over my back,
My orange tum has black spots
It looks just like join-the-dots.
Oh my – I’m a Great Crested Newt!

If I lose a toe or a leg
Another one grows instead,
My spots on my tum
Are different for everyone.
Oh wow – I’m a Great Crested Newt!

Being an amphibian is great,
I can move on any substrate,
Beneath rocks I sleep
And under compost heaps.
Oh yawn – I’m a Great Crested Newt!

In Winter when the year is late,
I need to hibernate,
In Spring I awake
And to water I take.
Oh gulp – I’m a Great Crested Newt!

I do a dance when I mate,
The females think I am great!
Up to 300 eggs are laid,
Not all hatch though, I’m afraid.
Oh boy – I’m a Great Crested Newt!

I have to be careful of fish
As I make them a tasty dish,
I come out at night
As Earthworms I bite,
Oh yum – I’m a Great Crested Newt!

Being a Newt is cool!
I might live in your pool.
But please don’t touch
I’m rare, as such.
Oh dear – I’m a Great Crested Newt!

My species is protected
So I must not be collected
Look after me
Or there won’t be
Any Great Crested Newts!

I wrote this when I was 8 years old, on 28th May 2013.

Make It and Eat It

Snap goes each piece of crisp, dark, pungent chocolate,
Dropping into a glass bowl of smooth, creamy milk chocolate chunks awaiting their magical transformation.
The smooth liquid velvety double cream drizzles like a ribbon into the pan,
As it heats, the surface begins to shimmer invitingly,
Small bubbles appear as it boils and then cools just a little, anticipating the joy to come.
Slowly, a ribbon of hot silky cream trickles over the waiting chocolate pieces
The mixture is stirred inviting the chocolate to melt into the cream
Making a marbled luscious silky, thickened pool.
Strong, pungent, dark freshly brewed coffee drips into the dark tempting pool,
Slowly and deliberately it is incorporated.
After the mixture has tantalised with its deep, rich aroma for an hour I can’t wait any longer!
The mixture has thickened into a thick, gooey, dark tempting mass.
I scoop delicious spoonfuls of the shiny, slightly gooey mixture, rolling each into a ball.
It starts to melt slightly leaving a thick gooey reminder on my fingers,
I look forward to licking it off when I’m finished, extending the treat.
I roll each small, dark, sticky treat into dark, dusty cocoa powder.
Smelling the tantalising aroma of chocolate makes me almost drool in anticipation,
Picking up a single truffle, it starts to melt slightly in the heat of my fingers,
I take my first bite into the soft, silky, smooth, sweet treat savouring how it glides across my tongue.
Boy it tastes good!
