An Eagle's Nest

High on a mountain in an Eagle's nest
three babes there were born
two were given flight and the same chance at life
but the third's wings were torn

So the mother flew in anger and said
what babe is this I see
here in my nest, one different from the rest
why was this babe born to me

then an answer came from the heavens
three babes were what you prayed for
though two are at best and the third one seems less
each babe was given no more

yet the mother still flew in anger
and questioned how could this be
for a bird without flight, is as a seer without sight
so what life as an Eagle has he

lower thy nest from the mountain
an answer from the heavens came down
for at Eagle at best, is no more is no less
of an Eagle flying high or on the ground

The Making of Man

First you start with a frame that's wide and sturdy
yet strong enough to bend
then you add a cup of hope and an ounce of pride
and slowly start to blend

then a tear or two must be added
to bind his soul to him
and two cups of love are poured in slowly
to fill his heart within

then a spoonful of courage is added
with a pound of strength to hold in each hand
and a pint of patience to finish
Behold, the making of man

A King

I saw a King, he was standing
in a field all his own
he was mighty like a warrior
facing a battle all alone

he wore green leaves that dressed him
in a cape long and wide
it took a hundred years of passing
to become a King of this size

with his long arms up reaching
the sky rested on him
and he stood strong without weakness
in the face of the wind

for not all Kings are men
who sit on a throne
the only King I've ever seen
stands in a field all his own

The Beast

they say that something evil
was born here long ago
it's mother came from heaven
it's father from below

it grew as half a woman
evil dressed in white
with a circle of darkness around her
to protect her from the light

she once flew up to heaven
looking for her mother's love
but there they took her wings away
and cast her from above

so then she searched the darkness
and journeyed far below
but her father would not claim her
for she had an angels soul

from there she wandered aimlessly
her soul in search of peace
evil touched by goodness
part woman yet still beast

The Artist

paint me a picture my grandpa would say
make the world come alive for me
use words for your drawing and feeling for color
help this old blind man to see

so I told him blue was a drink of cool water
the color of the sky
and white was a soft voice singing
a sad song the would make him cry

and yellow was a butterfly dancing
in the rays of the sun's golden light
and orange was a fire burning
giving warmth on a cold winters' night

and I remember my grandpa smiling
as he sat me upon his knee
he said he didn't mind being blind
as long as he had an artist like me

He

He stands so proud
and stands so tall
but how easily he bends

with one word from me
he fell like a tree
being broken by the wind

he wears his strength
just like a shield
and like a mountain he is strong

but with a touch from my hand
he's a wounded man
who's weapons are all gone
