I Wish I Could Cry

I wish I could cry
But tears will not fall
In situations where they would apply
Behind pride they would stall

I stood before my father at his wake
And my soul it forever changed
Still wetness on my cheek it did not make
No time for tears in a life so rearranged

I watched life come into this world
A child that bore my name
Emotions around my head swirled
But my face by tears would not be shamed

I’ve seen love end in a final embrace
And deprived my heart of that need
Not longer feeling it would be a disgrace
Still my eyes would not bleed

Crying I do not see as an unmanly reaction
When pushed beyond emotional limits
Rather causing you to lose traction
From one into two your soul splits

One day I may allow a tear to pass
And more too may flow
Breathing a final Alas
Before letting it all go

For now, I will keep the pain inside
Wrecking the soul it protects
Until a stronger peace can reside
And I learn to show what my heart reflects

Rise

Some birds fly and others soar,
other creatures never take flight,
should I seek ground or something more,
balancing the difference is the plight,

Is it wrong not to want what?
seems to be the dream to fly,
or can greater deeds too be sought,
without drifting much too high,

Time has not strengthened this desire,
the voice to rise still sometimes call,
losing self in all the mire,
yearning wanes after each fall,

Foregoing all that is prone to tempt,
perhaps there are better things,
the dichotomy in us we can not exempt,
from what happens when our heart sings,

Years has beat us down,
in youth we could not see,
from wanting to wear the crown,
and the hope of what we could be,

If life has not so crushed,
we will exercise this great might,
into flight we will not be rushed,
rising but keeping sight,
