Vanessa

Vanessa

Long after sleep has captured your body
And dreams, like butterflies, float above your head
I sneak into your bedroom,
rest my head on your pillow
To inhale the sweet fragrance
The aroma that is YOU!

You smell of fall wind
which tangles your braids.
Tangy orange and lime
still lingers on your breath.
The nape of your neck-
I think "new-born puppies"
And your hands are vanilla
like your favorite soap.

That scent- so complex, so unique yet
so yours
captivates my senses and encodes in my brain.

You talk in your sleep
and all of a sudden
I get a rare glimpse
Inside one of your dreams.

For My Husband

You are my constant, my breath, my comma
I understand my world through you
The slightest look and you unbend me
I cannot sleep without your hands

You have this stillness with which you save me
Your quiet shadow - my symphony
Your tears and laughter course through my body
My refugee camp is in your hands

So now our embers are just cool dust rocks
Our wars and triumphs barely a pause
We hide each other in all tomorrows
As we let go of yesterdays

A gentler wind now sways our bodies
Your eyes still hold my universe
The clock slows down
and with its rhythm
we swim to yet another bay

My Daughter No Longer a Child

I can't remember
when I no longer
had to look down
to see your face.

I can't remember
when you no longer
wore that blue tattered
and sun-stained dress.

I can't remember
when your hand opened
to touch that cosmos
and taste the rain.

My memory fails me
when I recall-
you spun the silk
and dropped your hair.

I see your posture
when you walk slowly
and take small steps
on river rocks.

I can't remember
when I first loved you
you are my heart-beat
my hands
my hair...

Little Landon

For my little boy

Wild eyes, damp forehead
one chase then broken
my vase - not your limbs.

Wheels flash, height, open,
one blink - you have taken
a plunge in the pool.

Legs scabby, undaunted
galloping, stomping
our dog is your horse.

Heros, villains, world's conquered
exploring, advancing
you're the king of your land.

Hands sticky with wonder
jumping over the oceans
you pause just to tell me - I am still your
queen.
