Flight For Freedom

Four years ago today
9/11 rang in our ears
Our Nation still cries a river
Into a sea of tears

Patrick Driscoll 70, was retired
Jane Folger 73, retired as well
Toshiya Kuge was a student
When the Twin Towers fell

Husbands and fathers
Todd Beamer 32, Jason Dahl 43
Alan Beaven 48, joined them
On United Airlines flight 93

Donald Arthur Peterson 66
And his wife Jean 55
Were proud to be Grandparents
They perished side by side

Mark Bingham 31, a businessman
Edward Porter Felt 41, would travel
Mark Rothenberg flew that day
When it all began to unravel

Joseph Deluca 52
A son, brother and close friend
Held on to Linda Gronlund 46
Until the very end

Nicole Carol Miller 21
Kissed her boyfriend at the gate
Christine Snyder 32, newlywed
Neither of which knew their fate

Deora Bodley 20, was a youngster
Honor Elizabeth Wainia 28, a daughter
Sandy Bradshaw 38 was a wife
What a senseless slaughter

Thomas E. Burnett Jr. 38, husband
Georgine Rose Corrigan 56, a mother figure
Cee Cee Lyles 33, was a wife and mother
Can now only be seen in pictures

Deborah Welsh 49, wife and good friend
Kristin Gould White 65, someone’s mother
John Talignani 74, Jeremy Glick 31
They were both fathers and someone’s brother

Waleska Martinez 37
Was a daughter and a sister
Andrew Garcia 62, husband and grandfather
Earned him the title of Mister

Richard Guadagno 38, “intense friend”
Colleen Fraser 51, someone’s sibling
Christian Adams 37, a husband and daddy
You can hear the angel’s sing

Patricia Cushing 69, an Aunt
Lorraine Bay 58, a flight attendant
William Cushman 57, was a construction worker
Into the field is where they were sent

Wanda Green 49, mom and daughter
Lauren Grandcolas 38, sister-in-law
Hilda Marcin 79 was someone’s mother
When the world began to fall

Louis Nacke 42, a son-in law
Along with Leroy Homer 36, a husband
Donald Greene 52, loved camping
With his brothers he called friends

So above you see the names again
Of the hero’s on United Airlines flight 93
We remember them today, four years later
For what they did for you and me

Hershey Kisses

The cabin was on a dirt road
we rode our bikes for miles it seemed
always knowing where to go
remember when Kevin got creamed?
Over the land filled with rocks
we'd kick the dust up in the air
wearing our shoes and socks
living without a care.
We would go to the lake each day
running to get there fast
all day lond we'd play
the time just seemed to last.
Across the lake you could see
all the oak surrounding the park
we'd always stay passed three
not leaving 'till it was dark.
The water was crystal clear
we swam all day long
sometimes we even saw deer
sat around and sang songs.
From the corner of our spot
where we'd jump unafraid,
the dock was sturdy and hot
Oh! the games that we played.
Running back and forth for hours
between the lake and the stream
sometimes there were showers
Doug would always make us scream.
The days it was colder
we'd pick berries bush by bush
our fingers got purple and older
Regan's bowl filled with mush.
The nights we'd spend together
with cinnamon toast and wishes
not caring about the weather
only about the Hershey Kisses.
I miss the times we sewed
pulling the threads too tight
the patience that you showed
to teach me how to do it right.
I thank the Lord each day
for leaving you here for us
the memories will forever stay
Thank you for your love.

Birds

If I had to put this into words
what I was thinking about the birds:

I'd say "I think they have it made"
existing in life
with anothers aid
The insects they dine on throughout their day
the water they drink
 when the sky is grey
and in the winter they fly away,
only to return on
any given spring day
When they're here
when the season is through
they'll be singing songs
for me and you
The sand and the sea beneath their wings
somewhere we've all lost, these precious things
so take sometime to think about
what society wants us to do without
Stop and smell the roses along the way
listen to the birds they've got a lot to say

Has Two Eyes But Cannot See

Oh why? Oh why?
Do I always cry?
It never really did any good
And that’s one thing I never understood
It’s the way I vent ‘cause my life’s so bent
All out of shape
Because of the rape
When I was only seven
I should’ve gone to heaven
But He made me stay
‘cause it’s the only way
to figure it out
What’s life all about?
And now I’m 29
And at the end of the line
It’s time to be me
But he just doesn’t see
What’s locked inside
Of his foolish pride?
To him this is life
And I am his wife
I want to be me
But he just doesn’t see
I don’t want to be poor
I want a lot more
A much better life
But I am his wife
I’m really not allowed
To feel happy or proud
I keep it inside
There’s no place to hide
The way that I feel
So here’s the deal
This is how it’s going to be
I’m going to be me
I’m getting a job
I’m not going to be a slob
For the rest of my life
Whether or not I’m his wife
Because of a friend
My life’s on the mend
To much brighter days
I’m almost out of the haze!

Pandemonium, Choas and Hope

PANDEMONIUM, CHOAS AND HOPE

Katrina came in with fury
Spreading devastation throughout
No discrimination was used
When she tossed their lives about

As the flood waters rose
People scrambled to the attic
Crashing through the roofs with fear
Knowing their mission was chaotic

They raised their hands and signs
Waving them in the sky
Hoping the rescuers would see
Their plight while passing by

Bodies floating in the sludge
That used to be their streets
Waiting for their own rescue
Where their souls can get some sleep

Days and days they waited
For food and water to arrive
They huddled together to keep safe
Thanking God they were alive

Distant cries of pain and despair
For miles you could hear
People scrambling with conviction
To keep their families near

Planes touched down on tarmacs
Filled with hope from far away
Thousands unloading goods
Not many knowing what to say

A woman stepped into their hell
A crew she brought along
To aid our huddled masses
With food, supplies and song

She hugged and comforted the weak
Bringing forth her enormous love
Telling all who would listen
That God was watching above

A Parents Prayer

I was sitting with the family
Staring at your empty chair
The table was giving their thanks
All wishing you were there
Your uncle had a smile
As the gravy boat was passed around
I sat writing a little poem
Without making a sound
When it came to be my turn
I stood behind your place
Holding up your military picture
So all could see your face
I started by lifting my glass
And praised you, “its how I feel”
Hoping that you also
Had a fresh, hot cooked meal…

My dearest child
I am so proud of you
For fighting for our country
What you were trained to do
Against it all you’re standing
Up to this not so small task
You do it for their families
Because of what our President asked
It’s not the money that drives you
You’re not playing a game
You’re rebuilding someone’s future
Delivering them from a life of pain
Know I’m thinking about you
As the holidays come and go
I’m so proud of what you’re doing
I just wanted you to know

I sipped my glass and set it down
Looking around the room
Not a dry eye could be found
Sons and daughters come home soon

My God be with you

A Work In Progress

She goes to church on Sunday,
Loudly she praises His name
She remembers what was said by Monday
Still reeling from the same
Tuesday comes and she’s in bed,
She struggles to recall
What is was the father said,
Or did he speak at all?
So now that it’s Wednesday,
She’s up to her old tricks again,
Falling off the wagon you’d say,
Not knowing where to begin
What do you think went on
As Thursday came to an end?
She tried to recollect but it was all gone
Except the memories of a friend
Friday came and went as well,
Fighting back the tears
After all she’s felt like hell,
For many, many years
With Saturday now sleep in her eyes,
And Sunday on the way
She looks for God in the skies,
Will she listen to what He has to say?
Then she walks through the door,
She feels the presence of her new friend
She’s all excited by what’s in-store,
So another week can begin
Monday comes with lots of rain and clouds are all around,
She tries to sleep with the pain, she dreams without a sound
This is a work in progress, as she steps onto the floor
What’s she trying to suppress, when she stops at the liquor store?

A Beautiful Memory

I was trying to find, some words to say
to help you get through, this sorrowful day

I remember when, we played as kids
she guided us all, to get us where we did.
Up and down the steps, throughout the summertime
as long as we were careful, she'd say it was fine.
The girls on one floor, the boys on the other
she was Aunt Iris to me, and she was your mother.
We all went to church trying, too young to understand
what His message was, while holding onto her hand.
We'd walk up the stairs, to the balcony so high
I can still recall her voice, making me want to fly.
Her sound had a spirit, all by itself
she sang the Lord's praises, Oh! how she carried herself.
We'd sit up there above, giggling sometimes like fools
making funny faces, breaking all the rules.

But not in my memory, do I recall
any harsh words, from that woman at all.
She would just smile, wave her finger like this
Tell me "no! no!", with a hug and a kiss.
and through it all, through the laughter and pain
She helped spread His message, through the words that she sang.

So goodnight Aunt Iris, rest your beautiful mind
it may have taken awhile, but God's message I did find.

Let's Talk

Let’s talk about, the air we breathe.
How it’s diminishing, with each downed tree.
Making room for more to come,
signs and smog, covering the sun.
fighting and war on T.V.
so what does that mean, for you or me?
Time will only tell us, when
we’ll be able to live righteous again.
In God’s kingdom, only He will judge,
but will He be able, to walk on the sludge?
Can our sense of morality win,
to save our souls from the demon within?
Our children are here giving hope to us all.
They’ll never walk, without learning to crawl.
With all this work outside the home,
the confusion they feel, from being alone
They need us all to help them grow,
sex and death are not something to show.
Hatred and anger can only itself breed,
love and patience, is what they need.
To pave the way for Jesus to walk,
Thanks for listening: I’m glad we could talk

Ode To the Unknown

The clouds rolled in quickly
As the cars rolled out
No one had a clue
What Katrina was all about

They packed things lightly
“We will be home in a day or two,
So feed and water the pets,
We’ll be home when the storm is through”

Side by side they slept
On cots and sleeping bags
While the Dome began to crumble
Changing their riches into rags

Not so still waters
Began to rise so deep
Only debris and disabled cars
Are what’s left on their streets

Power lines amongst the ruin
The dog walks slowly along
Looking for the home
To which he once belonged

Tent cities on the highways
Where they were safe from the disease
The view from where they stood
Brought them to their knees

No lights to come on
Only sirens, screams and cries
Searching for the living
While the dead float on by
