New Year's Eve Ballad

New Year's Eve Ballad

It’s true one year just ended
And that another one began
In places crowds did gather
They drank and offered cheer
There was singing and ‘twas dancing
Celebrating the New Year.

As a child I do remember
This special time of year
When bedtime was extended
And the neighbors were all there
Together at the strike of twelve
Celebrating the New Year.

And as I grew much older
As did the other friends I know
We continued all to gather
As this special time did near
We talked of all the years past
Celebrating the New Year.

So many friends are gone now
So many that I knew
But always I remember
The times that we did bear
I think of them now as I am
Celebrating the New Year.

Last year we met such challenges
Not all glory, not all fun
But stood each with the other
As we chased away the fear
We faced just ‘one day at a time’ and now are
Celebrating the New Year.

Cheers I say to others
As I pop the cork and drink
Thinking now all days are special
Though life sometimes does seem unfair
Still I drink to health and happiness
Celebrating the New Year.

Healing Touch

There is a certain healing touch
in ocean waves, the powerful progression of unending undulations, white caps crashing with determination, dancing with destiny.

There is a certain healing touch
as the salty strike of ocean air sends serenity and touches all my senses.

There is a certain healing touch
when the cooling spray from of sea water washes with its’ wetness and soothes my heated soul.

There is a certain healing touch
in the silencing and slowing of footsteps as they try to run in sand.

There is a certain healing touch
in being moved by innocence of children and the sandcastles they command.

Sitting near the surf, I watch the roll of ocean waves, soak up the strike of salty air, am washed by cooling waters, listen for the sound of footsteps in the sand, and am moved by the innocence of children in their play.

I feel healing from all five fingers of their touch.

Snowflakes

Snowflakes
by Sue K Green

Pretty are the snowflakes
As I watch them fall
Covering up the landscape
Pretty scene for all

I like to watch the snowflakes
They put on quite a show
As they flit and scatter
Everywhere they go

So many are the snowflakes
Falling down on me
I wouldn’t now start counting
A daunting task that be

Cold are the snowflakes
As too is the air
Hat, coat, and gloves now
A must for me to wear

White now are the snowflakes
Covering the ground
Careful not to slip now
Ice too is all around.

Streetlights on the snowflakes
Make for a pleasing glow
I watch now out my window
At still falling snow.

My Wonderful Love and Me

My Wonderful Love and Me

We met by the sand and the sea
My wonderful love and me

We sat on the sand by the sea
My wonderful love and me

We played in the waves of the sea
My wonderful love and me

The sun shone on us both at the sea
My wonderful love and me

We married there down by the sea
My wonderful love and me

We built us a house by the sea
My wonderful love and me

Our family grew with us there by the sea
My wonderful love and me

Years passed for us there by the sea
My wonderful love and me

Illness took her away by the sea
My wonderful love from me

Now I sit here alone by the sea
Sad that she’s taken from me

I think how we met by the sea
How happy we both seemed to be

I remember our times by the sea
Memories now only for me.

My Shoulder

My Shoulder

My shoulders
Hold the care of someone else
No warning

Heavy weight
Responsibilities grow
Caregiving

Tasks for two
Now are mine to meddle through
Keep Control

Remember
All appointments and the meds
Important

I can feel
The stress upon my shoulders
It grows now

No easy task
I strain to make the effort
Rewarding

Not easy either
Daily challenges await
Days go by

My love too
Struggles with both walk and talk
Stroke attack

Together
We face all the days ahead
Not I alone

Changed views now
Our tired eyes do see the world
Moving On

Rearranged
And with it much confusion
Sort it out

Love is strong
Any other seems so wrong
Find a way

Yesterday
The days with fun and flare
Are dreams now

My shoulders
Grow strong with all they carry
Tomorrow

Look forward
Work now toward better days
Promising

Aphasia

Letters, words, and phrases
Once piled, filed in my brain

Dumped went all the drawers
     Words went all askew
          Files, unsorted, scattered
               Mixed messages now astrew

To this scene I now awaken
Into this dreadful dream
Perplexed and puzzled
Tears now stream

Reasonable realignment
Unfeasible, Unworkable,
Words washed away
Impossible to reach

Imprisoned within

Words from others
 Echo in my ears
 “Sufferered stroke,” “healing hospital”
Only fuel fears.

Familiar faces
Names don’t know
Smiles and tears
Both do flow

Days now pass
I try to speak
It’s hard to find
The words I seek.

I find only
                        a
                    massive
                 mountain of
            tangled terms from
      which to pick and choose.

I strain to say the sounds and work the words.
Those around me puzzled, don’t quite understand.
I know ‘things’ and ‘objects,’ on much more
I can’t expand.

Frustrated, Unfulfilled
Feeling strained and stumped
Searching for simple syllables
In massive mounds where they were dumped.

[My husband suffered a stroke on November 15, 2012. His therapist tried to explain to me what aphasia was. As frustrating as it is for the victim to make himself understood, it can be equally frustrating for the caregiver who wants to understand. This poem is my effort to have others understand.]

Diamonds In Your Eyes

Diamonds In Your Eyes

Your eyes like diamonds
Sparkle now at me
Can I take that as a sign
That we two are to be?

Your eyes like diamonds
Their glare blinds my every thought
My strength is draining
This my love has wrought.

Your eyes like diamonds
Is it that you feel the same
A sparkle in your heart
Struck now by Cupid’s aim?

Assembling the Pieces

Assembling the Pieces

Broken pieces
Here upon my table
Sort them out

Many shapes like problems
Here within my life
Work them out

Match together pieces
Try to make it whole
Challenging

Big picture
Keep within your head
Gives direction

Finish puzzle
Gives you satisfaction
Inspiration

Magic In the Sky

Magic in the Sky

Magic in the sky
Sun low and day is ending
Colors brightly show

I with wonder watch
The sky as it is changing
Clouds with such a glow

Orange, pink and purple
Rainbow colors making way
Momentary show

Walking Through the Storm

Walking Through the Storm by Sue k Green

Cold and blustery, with
windblown snow, I try to make my way;
but the paths I remember
have changed so in a day.

Deep drifts challenge my every step as
I make new footprints through the storm,
so tired and confused faced with this
new norm.

Behind I leave our shared dreams and
much that we have known, walking this
path for two in directions now unknown.

I search for street signs and help along
this lonely trail but sometimes feel so
overwhelmed with all this new detail.

Love must speak for something and determination
pave the way taking ‘one day at a time’ we should
find our way.

I must believe the storm will end, the
sun will shine and our lives together can
withstand this new design.

through the eyes and mind of a caregiver facing
life ahead with post-stroke loved one
