Full Moon, Silver Night

Snow
Shining white
Still and soft
Shows silhouette shadows
Of the willow's slim fingers
Under a full silver moon

Black limbs of lace
Shadow dance in the flickering light
Of this full moon of shining silver

Like a shade, a cloud closes
Darkness slides over its beaming face
Dimming the shine of the full silver moon

Somewhere an artist's brush touches the canvas
Revealing the true color of the moon's painted face

Three Springtime Haiku

Hear the lush beauty?
	Cherry blossoms sing a song
the birds cannot sing.

Wake up lazy spring,
	your daffodils are sprouting.
Hear their trumpets blare?

The green ivy sleeps
as winter comes to its end.
Melting snow wakes it.

Slapstick

When the music stopped for Dad
And Shorty McCormick’s Jazz Band
Played their last gig, his drum set
Was retired to our dank basement

His traps resided in an extra large
Black cardboard suitcase and soon
My brothers and I commenced
Drumming the life out of its quiet remains

Before long the solid beat of the remaining
Percussion instruments were rendered silent
And were finally sent out with the trash

I hung on to the last reminder of my father’s
Well warn drum set that helped him keep time
During his many solo jazz improvisations

Now with love I hold on to his tattered slapstick
The only rhythmic survivor, still ready to keep the beat

Early Morning Harmony

Danced with
Conceived and born
Sung to and nursed
On a downy soft quilt

Transfused with
Vibrations of Ellington
Basie, Crosby, Waller
Goodman and Armstrong

Skyrocketed spiritually
By Kern and Carmichael
Porter, Gershwin and Berlin

Thanks Mom and Dad
For the beautiful music
We made together
On that bed of downy softness

Vamp

Hiding a hint of melody
In the free-wheeling ramble
Of the piano’s opening phrases

It’s a pitter pat preview like
Kelly’s singing steps as he
Splashes through a street of rain

It’s a long drawn out unraveling
Of the tune on Ray Charles’ piano
Before he shouts out a bluesy version
Of our patriotic America the Beautiful
