The Warning

It’s funny now
To know the truth
That all you care about is you
Your squinty eyes and sneaky smile
You had a plan all the while

Pretend to care
Say some words
And then not care
Who you hurt

Cause your plan is #1
All others be damned
Your having fun

You pile it on
Cause I can take it
Curse my name
And try to break me

But evil does
As evil see’s
Wait for my plan
It’s a doozy

Pretty For a Black Girl

You’re pretty for a black girl.
Such condescending words!
As if the fact that I am black
Lessens my worth.

You’re pretty for a black girl.
Am I supposed to smile?
Ignore the ignorance of your statement?
Should I really be proud?

You’re pretty for a black girl.
What does that really mean?
Can being pretty and black
Co-exist for me?

You’re pretty for a black girl.
Thank you for letting me know.
Too bad you don’t recognize
That I am so much more.

The Better Prize

The outer beauty that we see
Is only a façade
A trick used to confuse the mind
Although it seems quite odd

We tend to judge
Those that we see
On outer beauty alone
But what lies inside
The better prize
Should crown our lovers throne

This mortal life we live
Can be so short and sweet
We turn away
And in our haste
It passes instantly

So open up your foolish eyes
Ignorant to what’s inside
So easy to believe a lie
And miss out on the better prize

Colors of Me

There are many
Shades of me
They cover you
And color me
I can be any hue I want to be

Black or white
Neon bright
A darker color when we fight
A softer shade
Relaxed for when I sleep

A blue for when I’m feeling low
When wide awake, a light yellow
A range of shades for everything
When ready I’m an aubergine

I change from day to day you know
Like many colors of the rainbow
I shine brightly for all to see
Growing daily like the evergreen

My Spirit

My spirit cannot be broken
No matter how hard you try
I hold it tight deep down inside
Until the day I die

My spirit cannot be broken
It makes up the best of me
It makes me whole, deepens my soul
It helps me to be free

My spirit cannot be broken
Although the world does try
But see, I know who I am
Keeping my eyes on the prize

My spirit cannot be broken
A feat I deem impossible
And in the end it will remain
Even if nothing else does

Not Made For You

Empty and bare
nothing left
I gave it all to you

My heart and soul
yours to hold
Until you were through

Ultimate love
I changed for you
Only to finally see

After giving you all I had
you wasted me carelessly

I need a longer embrace
More kisses on my face
My hand held like I belong to you

More flowers for my stand
An everlasting man
who cherishes what was made for him

But
Now I realize
It won't work
you and I
I was not made for you

You need less than me
And I need more, you see
I was not made for you

Ugly Smile

Your smile is so ugly to me
It hides the face that I can’t see
And yet your grin
All the while knowing
You are no friend to me

I’m smarter than you think I am
I know that you pretend
To be there for me, by my side
And elsewhere in the end

So I smile
To hide the fact
That I know the truth
And I mirror your ugly smile
Looking back at you

Why Don'T You See Me

Here I stand
Out in front
Bare for all to see
I shed my skin
Emptied my soul
But you don’t see me

The foolishness I left behind
The years I lost, just wasted time
You’ve taken all I have to give
Requesting more so you can live

And now my shell is all I have
The rest gone down the drain
My one and only life I had
Has disappeared in vain

Its over now
My end is here
Still shaded by your tree
I gave my all for you to live
And you never saw me

My Last Day

I would wake up a little late
Open my eyes
Gazing upon your face
Make love to you
without saying a word
Not worry about
what could be heard

I would call in sick
Enjoy the day
Take a walk on the beach
Or by the bay
Hold your hand
Our fingers intertwined
Me in your heart
You on my mind

I would make a meal
For you and I
Feed you by hand
Sitting by your side
Wash your feet
Late that night
Silently gazing
In your eyes

I would promise you
My love always
And that id never leave
Forever stay
We’d live this way eternally, id say
That’s how I would spend
My last day

A Poet Lives Here

A door has opened up to me
Inside that room lives poetry

It invites me in
Says take a seat
And offers me its words to eat

It embraces me
Then takes my coat
Then sings to me
In special notes

It comforts me
Says stay awhile
Encourages me
With its warm smile

It offers me a place to stay
And says please come back any day

I am your friend
It says to me
I open up
It sets me free
