Pretty For a Black Girl

You’re pretty for a black girl. Such condescending words! As if the fact that I am black Lessens my worth. You’re pretty for a black girl. Am I supposed to smile? Ignore the ignorance of your statement? Should I really be proud? You’re pretty for a black girl. What does that really mean? Can being pretty and black Co-exist for me? You’re pretty for a black girl. Thank you for letting me know. Too bad you don’t recognize That I am so much more.

Truly a condescending remark and a sign of ignorance! I do not think too many people feel this way today. (well we can only hope so!) I enjoyed this piece.

Beauty comes in all shapes, colors, and sizes...it comes from within. Perhaps your beauty brought the person who said that to you, a little closer to realization...and perhaps not. At least he recognized you as beautiful and said so in the only way he knew how to...perhaps surprised at himself for feeling your beauty. Understanding has to start somewhere if we are ever going to truely love one another. And sometimes, the beginning is awkward. Nice write! Lovingly, Dane Ann

Beauty is only skin deep and color has nothing to do with it. Very good poem on prejudices of society. R.M.

Let's see....There's Beyonce, Rihanna, Whitney, Oprah, and the list goes on and on....Just remember...You are beautiful because you came from God and he doesn't make junk!

Kim, it's not often I read poetry like this. This was strong, yet I definitely sensed the pain created from the ignorance of society. Excellent job!
