Open Book

You say you're an open book,
so then why do I have to read
in between the lines
all the damn time?

Just speak your mind already.

I don't like these games
that we're playing.
Every chapter's the same-
just different days.

Where's our happily ever after?

No Boundaries

We both know I'll pick you, win or lose. I'll pick you even when you refuse because at this point, it's obvious, your only dating her just to not date me because we're complicated and her, she's the safest option but it's easy to see when it's just you and me, no one can come in between. And even she knows that. Your last two girlfriends did too. We have that undeniable chemistry, we act like there's no one else in the room. We have staring contests just for fun like you're not dating anyone. You said that you wanted someone, funny how that someone's never me. You're running away because you're emotionally unavailable and you don't want me to walk away so you just dangle the bait in front of my face every single day instead of just coming out and telling me if you like me or not. Your girlfriend even told you that I liked you and you couldn't resist but bring it up to me so I said "no comment" but all the proof you needed was my red face and what's surprising is you didn't reject me like you did a year ago because you have no boundaries and I'm an overthinker. That's why this is happening. We're the same but different.

Strangers or Friends?

We both agree that we're friends but last I checked, friends don't call at one in the morning. Friends don't pretend that they're not friends. Don't pretend not to know each other and friends don't look at each other like we do and tell me why everytime I do, it makes me want to cry but we say we're friends but never act like it. We both agree that it's nothing so why does it always feel like it's something? So are we strangers or friends? I've asked you this a million times and you always say the same stupid line, "I just don't want her finding out". "It's one little white lie". Sound familiar? Every time you say that, it makes me sick inside. I don't want to hide this anymore. Don't want to take her place being yours. Not saying that we should end this, not saying that we should keep on hiding this either. But it's fine though right, because you're leaving for Texas and this'll all blow over? Well news flash-it won't. The past will come back to haunt you like your shadow eventually always does. If we're just friends then why does it feel like it's nothing and everything at the same time? I don't want to be your Barbie doll, playing dress up, pretending to be your cowgirl when that's not my place.

This isn't even my race to run in. We should've just stopped before we even heard "Go!". So what's the prize when we both lose-strangers or friends?

The Last Act

I'm done playing this game with you because no matter what we do it's going to be a lose-lose. It was never going to be her who got hurt by this. Looking back, we were naive to think that. It was always going to be one of us ending up with a broken heart. We're similar in more ways than one. With feelings, you act like you have none while I feel everything all the time. You couldn't care less about this-what you're putting me through. When you're around me, you're not the same flashy guy that everyone else knows. That version of you is an act for eight hours a day, five days a week but nobody knows who you really are when the mask comes off, when the curtains close so can we just drop the act for once and call it what it is? I'm done playing this role that isn't even mine to play. Done playing this game that we claim we're not playing but we both know I can't just walk away either.

So let this poem be my final goodbye, taking my mask off, and letting the curtains close. Maybe you should do the same-and pretend it's SO easy to just walk away.

Counting on You

I'm counting on you and I know I shouldn't
but I'm counting like 1, 2, 3, 4
Waiting for you to walk through that door
I'm counting like 5, 6, 7, 8
Tell me it's gonna be alright, that you're gonna hold me tight
You say you don't like me so why do you always pick up the phone on the third ring but lately it's been the second
Tell me, do you find me annoying
What are we
What is this
You look at me when I'm halfway across the room with stars in your eyes but that's the same way you look at her
But you're looking at me like I'm the moon
See your eyes light up when I walk in the room
You make me laugh and smile all the time
So do you hate me, love me, even want me around
Do I keep counting on you or just let you walk back out that door that you walked through

Mixed Signals

We're so close, but you still feel distant, like a hand out of reach. I can almost feel it, but almost never seems to be enough with you. I always have to be all in or all out, while you stay in the middle, sending me mixed signals. My Wi-Fi connection is more stable than you. Maybe that's the problem, I keep trying to connect to someone who's emotionally unavailable.

Cost of a Crush

Intro: The whole grade knows I like you anyways,
And you say you don’t care, so why were you blushing?
Why didn’t you respond?

Verse 1: Just tell me you hate me already,
'Cause I’m not gonna keep waiting for you.
I liked you since first grade,
Then we grew up and grew apart.
The ty thing about telling you
Is that it cost me our friendship.
And now I’m stuck waiting for two days
To get rejected by the one guy
Who got me better than my best friend did.

Chorus: I just wish this isn’t how our story ends,
But I know someday, somehow, we’ll meet again.
Yeah, this is a spring I’ll never forget.
Why can’t we just be direct?

Verse 2: I remember yesterday we were talking about relationships,
And I got a little worried thinking you wanted someone else.
I get that I’m about to be twelve,
So why am I finding “the one” so soon?
Can someone tell me why I’m thinking about our honeymoon?
Why do I see my whole life when I look into your eyes?
Think I just need some advice on how to handle this.

Bridge: I hope that this was all a dream,
But it wasn’t, and it cost me one of my most important friendships.
Now I’m stuck befriending your friends
To get an answer out of you before Monday.
I’m replaying the whole scene in my mind,
Wishing I could go back and stop it from happening.
But now I’m questioning why you didn’t respond.
Maybe it’s because of a certain blonde.

Outro: I’m replaying the whole scene in my mind,
Wishing I could go back and stop it from happening.

Chasing Echoes

Intro: At midnight I hear the echoes of your voice
And I start falling towards an invisible you

Verse 1: Looks like gravity wants us together
But you don’t even know I exist
Guess I'm just stuck in my own mirage
Still chasing love that only I can see

Chorus: Like waves crashing where the shore should be
Then I hear a scream and wake up
Only to figure out that it was just me

Verse 2: I refuse to believe that I just woke up from a dream
Everything felt real; I could hear the echoes of your footsteps
And I heard children laughing and running
The closer I got, the more the sounds faded away

Bridge: The sounds are just out of reach, I promise I'll get there
Falling, calling out your name but no answer
I'm stuck chasing echoes that just vanish into thin air
I see the sky flicker into rain, then thunder
Oh, how the skies are matching my heart

Outro: Washing everything away but still, I call your name, no response
I don't know if I should keep calling out your name or just accept defeat
I see a silhouette in the distance and it's coming closer
It's an older version of me asking for advice
'Cause she has a fractured heart
I look into my older eyes, and see the truth I tried to hide
No echoes, no mirages left, just the heart I've left behind

Heart on Lockdown

I didn't notice what we were doing 'till it was too late. My heart was on lockdown mode, yeah I was naive back then and my heart didn't notice until you admitted that your hand was shaking while we were on call. I was reading you my poems about you, about us, about whatever this is and you had the nerve to say that they were good, nothing else, and didn't want to admit to what we were doing. Looking back on it now, I'm replaying the moments when you were literally waving all the red flags in front of my face but I didn't notice because I see life through a different lens but only when I'm with you. Maybe I should just take the filter off of this version of you that's in my head, the one I thought was the real you, but the real you only cares about your cowboy hat and your chevy truck. Nothing else, especially not me. I should've known better to trust you. My friends who barely know you warned me not to trust you. Did I listen? No, because I didn't care back then. But now I do. Now I know the real you.
And now my heart isn't on lockdown anymore. Now when you look at me during class, my heart doesn't skip a beat, signaling to my brain that this is over. Finally.

I don't miss you

I don't miss you because you were never mine to miss, never mine to call, never mine to talk to, never mine at all. I miss the calls, I'll admit that. I understand now that we were both running towards a safe place, comfort, not knowing what we were actually running into, how our feelings would evolve over time. I don't miss you. I miss what it was, the feeling, the excitement but I realize now, after everything, that it felt like something because it was. We both didn't know any better but now we do, and that's why it ended. Why I ended things and you couldn't.

I couldn't sit here anymore pretending to be her, pretending to fill her shoes because she's not answering your texts and yet, you still claim to be the perfect boyfriend, that you love her but if only she knew what was happening behind her back, maybe, just maybe, right now, you'd be single.
