Sarah Wellen Poem
What great perspective flying gives;
The mundane is surreal;
Wide angled eyes so clearly see
Our Earth's greatest appeal.
The land's a patchwork quilt of farms,
And lakes look just like puddles;
The rivers wind like slithering snakes,
And clouds are soft as cuddles.
Like breast of mothers oozing milk,
Snowy mountains proudly stand;
And dots of houses look like salt
Coarsely sprinkled on the land.
The cars all glisten in the sun
Like jewels reflecting light;
Distance, like a trompe l'oeil,
Fools the eye and hides Earth's blight!

Sarah Wellen Poem
Assaulted by man and machine,
Intertwining branches of pristine woods
Form a brave barrier.
A paved path,
Line of demarcation,
Divides Nature from civilization.
The truce is uneasy;
The detritus of man
Encroaches upon the boundary.
Thus man defiles the very sanctuary
He spiritually needs,
Diminishing himself in the eyes of the gods.

Sarah Wellen Poem
We lived on the edge of poverty, society, sobriety,
And then you came, Katrina,
And blew us all away...
We had no transportation, information, confirmation,
And then you came, Katrina,
And blew us all away...
We lived in quiet misery, our lives a muted gray,
And then you came, Katrina,
And blew us all away...
There's not a shred of hope left, we can no longer stay,
And all because, Katrina,
You blew us all away...

Sarah Wellen Poem
The Cardinal came to lunch today
In stately robes of red,
He deigned to dine in my backyard
With other birds I fed.
His brown-plumed mate, two steps behind,
Trailed his Eminence,
She knew she must remain obscure,
Her role in life's events.
Although mere crumbs were left for her,
Her eating was restrained,
To serve her Lord she was intent,
His Grace must be sustained.
With Kingly strut he did outshine
The reddest Maple tree;
He fed his fill, the crown intact,
He flew away from me!
