The Cardinal

The Cardinal came to lunch today In stately robes of red, He deigned to dine in my backyard With other birds I fed. His brown-plumed mate, two steps behind, Trailed his Eminence, She knew she must remain obscure, Her role in life's events. Although mere crumbs were left for her, Her eating was restrained, To serve her Lord she was intent, His Grace must be sustained. With Kingly strut he did outshine The reddest Maple tree; He fed his fill, the crown intact, He flew away from me!
