nudge of soul

i remember my mother once told me

that when you’re laying down,
and hear a heartbeat
that doesn’t quite match with yours,

it was your soulmates heartbeat
so intertwined that you can hear it,
no matter how far away

i didn’t believe her
i knew id never find love
sure, i heard that little pounding
my ear drumming in rhythmic patterns
once could perceive as love,
one could see as life.

but i glanced at her anyway
i gave her the smile she
could only explain as one that
cleared story skies.
i just wanted to see hers too.

she told me these words when i was young,
yet i grew up with them
we had a connection with words
no matter what they meant,
we had both felt them.

years had past
i’m 23 now, driving down the highway
past flashing lights, and people
in a rush, hoping they aren’t late

i hoped i wasn’t late.
the hospital was just down that exit.
i sped up, as did time.

that little pounding slowed down
though i never believed it, i felt chills
as if that beat was a melancholic string
tied to what’s next to come,
dragging me with it

room 214 held my mom
in her hospital bed.
through my life of loud sounds,
things i could never really silence,
i tuned it out. all i wanted to hear,
was my moms voice.

tears running down my cheeks, ones
i felt would never dry,
she looked at me with that smile that
cleared all harsh weather
one tear, the last tear.
the beating was gone.

i went home that night, with the feeling
of nothing, i was numb.
i laid in my bed and stared at the wall.
that beating was missing.
i had remembered what she once told me,

turns out a soulmate
doesn’t have to be a lover,

just two souls destined to be strung together.
