She Heard The Old Man Sing

It was late at night when she heard the old man sing , 2 am when he thought no one would hear . Slow and sweet he sang the songs once sung by a love passed on; beautiful and best enjoyed alone, unaware others are listening at night she will never speak to him about this secret

They all noticed something the day I lost you

They all noticed something about me, the day that I lost you
The Captian sat me down and questioned, I wouldn’t tell him but he knew
Eventually I bared my soul
I told him about you
The life we planned , everything
I’m dying with out you
That I promised myself I would never beg for someone in my life
But there I was, begging for you to stay by my side
I had to step away, embarrassed , because of the tears in my eyes
Firemen don’t show weakness, firemen don’t cry
“How do I turn it off Cap ?” I asked
“This life is why he’s gone. “
“ You will learn in time “ is all he said
He lost his love to this life too
“ Our world is harsh and scary, but one day the right one will stand by you”
“ you will learn not to talk so sharp, realize how values change. To us the littlest matters. The littlest is every day”
“ our word is all we have, we will give the world to those we love”
“ I’m not warm and fuzzy Cap” I say
“ I try but my heart is cold. I spoke sharp to the one I love and now I am all alone”
I told my Captain about you, but I had to walk and hide
Because of the tears in my eyes
firemen don’t cry.

Welcome Home

She didn’t know what to expect,
a foreign land to what was supposed to be familiar but so different
The smell of coffee, diesel fumes, cologne and bacon grease all stations smell the same
Doughnuts on the table; warm smiles and back slaps
“ Where are you from? “ let the California jokes fly because only Cali would send over a small vegetaran female
“ grab a cup, sit with us.”
“ your part of our family now”
Something she had waited so long to hear.
Laughing during movie night
Her own locker, dresser, bed. She has her own seat on the couch.
Sitting backwards with a old school helmet
Oversized headphones on her ears
Training was done from different points of view
She got sworn in last night
She made it home

What People Forget

People seem to forget what love really is. It goes past flowers, small gifts. It’s much more than that. Love showed up when you aren’t longing for it.Love is the reason you get though a long day. Love is those little text messages you see on your phone when you get a second to breathe and time slows down enough for you to smile. Love waits for you as dirty and greasy as you might be from work with a warm hug and the shower running. Love eats ice cream with you for dinner as you binge watch your favorite show that you have seen a million times . Love is off key singing in the shower, music blasting from your kitchen as meals are being made. Love is the reason you cook as you put all your effort into a meal. Love is lazy day cuddles, stories about your day, inside jokes and stupid names you call each other. Love is wondering where all your soap went in the shower and not really caring. Love is the toilet seat left up and beard stubble in the sink because they are late for work, as a apology for the mess is being yelled as they are out the door. Love is being pushed from your comfort zone in every possible way. Love is looking at them and going “ they are worth it. Let’s go” and you end up doing things and going places you never thought you would be. Love is taking chances and learning things about yourself you never knew; and actually seeing for yourself that language truly has no barrier. Love forces you to learn. Learn that your ego and pride are stupid, and to push them aside. Easy to say hard to do.
Love is a lot of things, you just have to know how to look for it.
