Snowflakes

I spread my fingers, held my hand up high,

As countless snowflakes floated coldly by,

Just like you did, without a last goodbye

And in that silence, I was left to cry.

You came to me as the most precious gift,

The North Star steering my ship through the night.

But then you left just like the snow adrift,

Abandoning me, destitute of light.

I watched the snowflakes, bound to melt apart,

And asked myself if there would be a day

When our sweet memories treasured in my heart

Would meet the same fate, doomed to fade away?

Sonnet 1: I love you more than any heart has known

Why should I bother if the sun should die,
The darkness reign and drain away the air?
Because ev’n Eden’s garden in the sky
Would turn to barren hell without you there.
Why should I be concerned about tomorrow,
How many gruesome months and years have passed?
Without your breath, I’m drowned in waves of sorrow
And feel as though it would forever last.
You are the gears and screws that synchronize
The flaming circulation in my veins,
A clockwork heart, where fiery passions rise,
Yet tightly bound by love’s unyielding chains.
Oh please, my dear, do not leave me alone!
I love you more than any heart has known.

Sonnet 2: Can anything be colder than winter?

Can anything be colder than a day

When clouds of winter make the sun’s embrace

Become a shadow of its former grace

And summer’s verdure gives in to decay;

When snow like burial garments shrouds the hay,

Bleak nature trudges with a mournful pace;

The winter’s gusts make sharp cuts on the face

With blades concealed, as though designed to flay?

Yet, when love’s ardent flame burns out in vain,

The silence answers all unselfish pleas,

The tired wings can’t find their resting nest,

Not even death can ease the inner pain.

Thus, winter’s cold feels like a summer’s breeze

Compared to what remains inside my chest.

On a New Year's day

Located where the mountains and the sky collide,

The great pagoda floats amid the sea of clouds,

With a luxuriant garden stretching far and wide,

And solemn sculptures monitoring the sacred ground.

Along the thousand steps up to the holy site,

The usual peaceful atmosphere is swept away

By swarms of people coming for the New Year’s rite,

Who slowly trudge ahead in total disarray.

The strident screams and bitter curses fill the air

Instead of hopes and wishes for the coming year,

As the exhausted pilgrims jostle in despair

And rush to fill the gaps as soon as they appear.

The tribute of all kinds is carried up the way,

From lavish feasts to gems and gold in heaped-up piles.

And those who only manage just a humble tray

Are met with mocking glances and disdainful smiles.

The central square lies shrouded in a veil of haze

As people light their incense and the chant begins.

Each man thrusts money into Buddha’s hand then prays

For power, fortune and atonement for their sins.

Observing the surroundings from a stairway yonder,

My heart grows heavy, and my mind begins to ponder:

How far has this corrupt society gone insane

When people bribe the deities for their vulgar gain?

The beacons of light

As darkness wriggled into every place,

The land was governed by a veil of silence.

The previous vivid life had left no trace,

All but some crickets singing in defiance.

The mortal realm stood petrified as though

Succumbing to the conquest of the night.

However, in the sky, a tiny glow

Was rather willing to put up a fight.

What a one-sided clash of force

Conducted by the rebel and the tyrant,

And yet a brutal one without remorse

Between the little David and the giant.

Oh, how alike we were, the lonely star

That dwelled in an unfathomed galaxy!

Though separated by a space too far,

We both possessed a common destiny.

We were the beacons of sagacity,

The last remaining citadels of light

Amidst the ocean of opacity

That wrapped the whole world in the depths of night.

The sorrow of war

Intoxicated by the joy of peace,

His mood was lifted to the fragrant cloud.

Half running, he returned to the home street.

His burdened feet could barely touch the ground.

At last he stopped before a housing block.

Imbued with moss, it looked so aged and dim.

No light was seen – the time was two o’clock,

Yet he hoped, someone was expecting him.

A sense of joy was surging up inside

As soon he would rejoin his darling one,

Of whom he’d thought throughout the placid nights

And brutal days, amidst the choir of guns.

For many bloody and horrendous years,

He had been tortured in a ceaseless burn

Recalling when she’d said to him in tears:

“I promise I will wait for your return.”

And now his dream would soon become fulfilled -

A medal for his courage in attack,

For all the blood and sweat that had been spilled,

For someone who had come to hell and back.

His heartbeat was like thunder in the sky

As he approached and gently tapped the door.

He called her name but there was no reply

As if she hadn’t lived there anymore.

He felt like an eternity had passed

Before, eventually, there was a noise.

He could hear somebody was coming fast,

Awakened by his unexpected voice.

When she appeared, he felt a great delight

Surpassing all the earthly joys combined.

But such a dream come true was killed outright

When he perceived another man behind.

They stood there for a while without a word,

As if the story had revealed itself.

His heart was broken, and his eyes were blurred.

He turned around with burdened feet like hell.

So much for all the hopes he’d clung on to!

So much for all the vows that had been said!

He didn’t know if this was false or true.

His sanity was absolutely dead.

He staggered aimlessly along the street

And sometimes uttered a hysterical scream.

From then on, he had nowhere to retreat.

There was no longer any hope or dream.

So this was what the time of peace would be!

His vessel had to take another course.

The glorious, brilliant rays of victory

Had paid him with an even greater loss.

Sonnet 3: An ode to my goddess

Once, legend told of Venus, born from foam,
Her charm extolled in tales and poetry.
Yet even she, though praised all over Rome,
Would feel eclipsed if she set eyes on thee.

Her lips, though soft, could never speak as sweet,
For when you sing, the world stands still to hear,
The stars, though dazzling, falter in defeat,
While even lifeless stones begin to cheer.

I worship thee, my goddess, pure and true,
In every verse and song and even more,
My ardent heart’s a sacrifice to you,
A temple where your beauty I adore.

Because I’m bound by your enchanting sway,
A faithful servant, willing to obey.
