Guilt on the Graveyard:

Maybe it took the world losing you
For me to see what I could have had
Starring at homecoming pictures wondering how I failed to see the diamond shine
Maybe it takes being nearly 26 to realize 
What you want at 16 isn't what you need
Through the photograph I remember your laugh and all the fun we had... Your kind deeds.

Guilt on the graveyard 
Wishing things were different
Thinking you could have been the BEST
 best friend I never had.

Guilt on the graveyard 
Wishing I had appreciated the rare kindness you embodied 
A diamond amongst the dust
Wishing there was a gleeful, different story of us.

Was being stubborn a must?
Oh, me at 16...
Shouldn't I have known that “weird” was really “wonderful” in disguise?
Shouldn't I have known “rare” was your type of guy?

Reflecting on my life 
And the ones who passed through 
Harrowing regret
Hating that I forgot to remember you.
Stomach on the grass
Wondering if my guilt will ever pass 

My guilt on the graveyard
Tells me I should have called 
After all.

Author’s note: this poem is about the importance of recognizing and appreciating good, genuine people while they're still in your life (and how one should make an effort to keep in touch with said genuine people).
