Veronica Joseph Poem
i curl your
long dark hair in my fingers
at your neck
as I pull you down
I wait to feel the rough end of day
beard
on my face
your eyes close a little then open
to watch me
look at me, I whisper
dont stop
looking at me

Veronica Joseph Poem
a small old woman
94
sat in the field
in the most sturdy chair
face upturned
to fireworks
and she said over and over to her son's wife
"in all my life i never saw that before"
again and again
the colors exploded
into stars and galaxies of different sparks
and her tiny face turned up in wonder
"i've never seen anything so beautiful before"
and there you could see
her face as a girl
her life to come
her love ahead
and all the beautiful things she'd never seen before
and turning
I could see again
the same in her granddaughter's eyes.

Veronica Joseph Poem
my left handed lover
has a silken
touch
knowing
reaching
holding
and yet
breathless
in time.

Veronica Joseph Poem
home at night
you bring me my shoe
you've been sleeping with
during the day
usually the one
kicked off last night
is your favorite
you've been working hard
keeping the house in order all day
watching the boys
keeping those rabbits at bay
time for your walk
but first do our welcome home dance
ears back
puffing around the shoe
I love you too.

Veronica Joseph Poem
Sex
in all its glory
is all there is
the driving force in everything that moves this world
is what man and woman are made for
our journey to be ourselves cumulates in finding the person
that fits us so..perfectly
so physically
and makes sex a blaze of glory
a tender mercy
a private prayer of committment
a moment of conception
a whisper
a cry
a wonder
trust
love
sex
do not turn your head to deny sex
and sexuality
it is the majority of humanity
bring your children up in a house where sex is healthy
and partners
are respected
and they will go forth and find a partner to cherish
herald sex
as the most intimate of god given gifts
the most healing moment you will spend
in the arms of another

Veronica Joseph Poem
He stopped his father in the drive
put his hand on his fathers arm
"I'm not sure" he started to say
"this marriage is for me"
His father looked him over - this son
this youngest of all his children
the sweetest brightest one of all
about to ruin his life
"Dont then" he said "stop it now, or you'll
bring children you can't abide.
Resentment will ruin everything
that you are inside.
She'll deny you love
she'll poision your soul
She's a blood sucking bitch from hell
no one's going to tell you
no one's going to say
that not one of us can stand her
she's really in the way."
Then the light snapped on.
Wedding day.

Veronica Joseph Poem
I can't wait to have that empty nest
that peace and quiet
days of rest
texts and emails can tell
that everyone is doing well
I can sit in the garden and text you back
enjoy the quiet
ice tea and a book
I'd have the dog all to myself
maybe I'll get another him a companion
I'll enjoy the order
a little less dust
time to myself
daydreamings a must
I will think a whole thought without interruption
make love any time of day
in every room
without fear of discovery
(that could be the best part)
we'll be like teenagers all over the house
when, again, are you all getting out?

Veronica Joseph Poem
spring curtains blow in the street breeze
women's voices in the kitchen sharing
news
and family secrets
I'm under the bed against the wall where they
cant get me
I don't want to be found.
Here I can listen to the house happening
not visible
and they'll forget me
and
talk
and I can hear things
never said
and all the things that are.
I push my back up against the wall
my grandfather is singing
you are my sunshine
on the back porch.

Veronica Joseph Poem
I arch your back
hold your chest
kiss your neck
you're mine
submit
submit
I whisper now
I know what you
want
you're mine
kisses on your shoulders
lean into me
I'm strong
I can take it all
dont hold back
you're mine.

Veronica Joseph Poem
I'm roasting some dinner
putting things away
potatoes in the oven
meats on the way
peaches in a big dish
cinnamon and sugar
mail on the table
towels to be folded
I'm wiping the counters
putting away the dishes
thinkng about ice tea
and maybe watermelon
I'm counting how many
will sit around the table
how many will be late from work
and miss the conversation
I'm sitting on the steps outside
throwing the ball to Redd
and on the air I smell the dinner
I wish I was eating instead.
