Warrior

I know your heart is hurting
The pain is deep and real
Residing there for way too long
Without the chance to heal
Grief has since settled in your core
And you now see the damage done
The aches are felt in layers
Losses piled up, one by one

A big, brave step you took that day
Leaving that toxic life behind
You beared the wrath for many years
Ignoring how you felt inside
One can only persevere so long
Until you have to make a change
So, though the journey's scary now
And the road ahead feels strange

Be kind and patient with yourself
And soon you'll come to see
The timing of this moment
Is exactly what you need
For when your brokenness lets the light in
Rebuilding that valiant man inside
Keep the faith and stand your ground
And the Warrior in you will shine

Strangers

Dear Stranger,

I am not sure what you see in her
But she seems to have taken your breath away
Captivated all your senses
And robbed you of your self healing at the same time
She has become your focus, clouding your vision
I am just a fleeting thought, no longer enticing
And with no inclination to respond
Just like that...
We were strangers

Big Brave Steps

The sounds of the orchestra filled the room
Ballgowns and tuxedos graced the dance floor, and in one corner, an elite group of gentlemen mingled over scotch

In the early days, he treated her like royalty
Posh dinner parties and fancy galas
Always the steady beauty on his arm
He had no intention of loving her
She was just for show

But soon, all of the pieces began to fit
Late nights at the office
Endless executive meetings
His 'misplaced' his phone
He had been playing her all along

Yes. It was time
Time for big brave steps and a big-girl move
It was now or never
With one final glance at the men in the corner of the ballroom, silently, she slipped out

Mentally Drowning

She cried her heart out in the shower this morning
Desperate, anguishing tears
Uncontrollable, convulsing sobs

Anxiety within was strangling her
Clenching and crippling
Incarcerating her into a frozen-like state

All the while
No one heard her cries
No one shared her suffering

No one knew how defeated she felt
How crumpled her courage was
How convoluted her coping skills had become
How much it was consuming her

Porcelain contours cradled her body as she wailed
Powerlessly...
Fearfully...
and...
Alone

It's Ok To Say No

It's okay to say No
If you're not ready for something new
If you're questioning and confused
If you are unsure or if you hesitate

It's okay to say No
While you're moving forward
If you have to take a step back and pause
Or wrestle
Or revisit

It's okay to say No
If your feelings are causing you to contemplate
And you need to clarify your intentions
Check in with your conscience
Re-evaluate or reconsider

It's okay to say No
If your heart is craving excitement, but yet you feel torn
And alarm bells are going off in your head
No matter how quiet

It's OK to say No

Let That Ship Sail

Mayday!
Mayday!
This heavy heart is drowning me
I'm distressed and in a panic
And so far away from shore

Call the coast guard!
Send out an SOS!
I'm not equipped to say goodbye
In unchartered waters, you left me behind
Alone
To navigate your stormy seas

Two Years Later

The words on the page resonated deeply
The plot was relatable, as were the characters
She empathsized
First true loves, still holding love
Even though, present day
Found them each in different life stories

As she turns the page, the scene resembles a chapter in her own life story
Several years into adulthood
Roots and relationships established
Both seemed comfortably numb
No one could have predicted, nor could have expected
A cordial reaching out would draw them close

The plot thickens
Adventures unfold, yet complications arise
Uncertainty begets both doubt and disillusionment
She can totally relate
Two years have gone by
They have both moved on

'Feelings aren't facts', she reminded herself
The words seemed so simple, yet, their meaning felt complex
How is it those familiar, intuitive ponderings still pull and tug?
Those dealt-with, treasured, tucked away thoughts and emotions resound and resurface?

She knew it was too late
There was no going back
Perhaps it's just a reminder of what's healed
But connections don't just ... disappear
She closed her eyes and the book
And placed it gently on her lap

Two Ships

We are two ships
On a solo sail
One upstream, and the other down
Night falls
We drift along
Our beacon, the light of the moon

We are two ships
On a solo sail
One downstream, and the other up
Day breaks
The sun arises
One departs, the other retreats

Fleeting and unaware
On a voyage to nowhere
We are two ships

Hometown Visit

My last visit home was sad, but true
All weekend I waited, just to see you
But the expectations I held, were much too high
Lowest place on the totem pole, there was I

When finally, we met after a lot of time wasted
It felt like my presence was nothing but hasted
My words, though genuine, read much like a song
Of love, loss, sorrow, and timing gone wrong

Your response to my letter, still I await
Forward motion requires a slow, but steady pace
The absence of you in my day, at times it's still hard
It's easier for you, but you had a head start

Luckily, this visit home was different in nature
A reason to celebrate, made time pass much easier
Still, reminders were there, and felt in my midst
Sending a text to say hello, was hard to resist

So as this week passes, and a new one begins
Seven more days to wonder if or where, I fit in
But the longer I wait, the more healing I do
What matters most in the end, is I get over you

Brave Beginnings

'Encourage' Contest
Sponsored by Regina McIntosh
Older poem of mine (January 2021)

BRAVE BEGINNINGS

Brave, beautiful girl
A New Year has emerged
A fresh, clean slate
Perfect for growth and new beginnings

You struggled
You persevered
You overcame
You conquered
A restoration of health and healing awaits, but fear not!
Everything you need is already inside of you
You are strong and courageous
You are capable
You are resilient
And you are not alone

Every challenge you face, you willl confront
And your struggles will turn into strength
Remember this when your faith falters or your willfulness wanes
You can do this
Persevere
One more day
One more hour
One more minute
And then repeat
Keep taking those sturdy strides
Don't worry if you backtrack, or even retrace your steps a hundred times over
Be patient with yourself
Make it part of the dance!
Forward is forward, no matter the speed
Or how tiny the steps ??
