Attraction

My breath catches in my throat and my mouth falls open,

My eyes lock onto your dark blue irises,

Your eyes are sapphire gems and I want to hold them,

Time slows and my vision blurs,

My heart takes off like a wind up toy and I clutch at my chest,

A smile plays on your lips and creeps up to your eyes,

I feel my own mouth transform into a grin,

I feel like running up to you and leaping into your arms,

I feel like filling the space between us completely and indefinitely,

I feel like I've known you all my life,

But we've just met,

And I say hello,

And you say hello,

And we part ways,

Dreaming about our next encounter.

Falling Leaves

The leaves whisper in the trees,

They crackle like fire underfoot,

They spoil and rot,

The color of their skin turns,

As they die in a brilliance of color,

Their crumpled bodies lay sprawled across the grass,

Waiting to be collected and put in body bags,

Or cremated in burning barrels or firepits,

The death of a season,

They take away the green of the grass,

They leave the trees bare,

Their spindly skeletons stand rigid,

Having lost their sway along with their leaves,

The leaves take away the flowers,

The birds begin to dwindle down,

Their trilling growing quieter and quieter,

They consider leaving for warmer air to fill with their song,

The leaves take so much,

But give our world a flash of color in return,

Shiny, eye-catching gold,

Like jewelry dressing the trees,

And fiery orange and red,

Bursting with the color of flames,

A wonderful gift I sometimes take for granted.

The Wishes I Keep To Myself

My wishes fill me,

The seeds of my wishes lay stagnant in my mind,

They blossom in my heart,

I wish you could see them,

I wish you could fulfill them,

I don’t wish on stars,

The sky is full of other people’s wishes,

I wish I hadn’t told you my wishes,

You try to make them come true,

But they’re unreachable,

They’re ridiculous,

They’re unnecessary,

I feel guilty for wishing,

For wanting,

But you make my wishes grow,

You water them,

You shed light on them,

And it’s like sunlight,

You nurture them until they’ve bloomed into beautiful realities,

And I realize that everyone needs someone to encourage their wishes.

Summer Night

Moonlight flows down from the sky like milk,

The stars burn holes into the darkness,

Their patterns take shape and I collect them,

I trace them with my fingers,

Their unnatural names dance on my lips,

Shadows skitter across the grass,

And mutate into monstrous forms,

Ready to swallow me up,

But I’m safe,

Because I’m under the light of the moon’s florescent skin,

Tucked securely under the Earth’s nightlight,

I hear insects chatter from the trees,

And wonder how such ugly things can make such beautiful sounds,

I hear the crackle of thunder moving towards me,

The frogs begin to croak in recognition,

And I feel the rain start to fall,

The cool water feels luxurious in contrast to the hot, sticky air of the night,

I let it run down my skin,

And soak my clothes,

Lightning flashes golden with razor sharp lines,

It’s jagged bolt strikes a tree with enough power to jar my teeth,

It splits and chars its flesh,

Fear jolts me like electricity and I run inside, laughing at myself,

Our old screen door swinging behind me.

Designs R Us

My factory produces art,

The outside is composed almost entirely of stained glass,

When the sunlight hits it, it looks like it’s on fire,

It’s insides are filled with more color,

In the first room, the world’s best artists sit at aisles placed in a circle,

In the next room, graffiti artists attack the canvas covered walls with slashes of spray like mace,

A slide covered in inspirational drawings takes you to the largest room,

Where enormous sculptures are constructed,

Animals and people made of clay, stone, and marble dance, fight, and sit calmly as my workers work steadily to shape them,

Smaller rooms trail off from the sculpting room,

One of the rooms is a dance studio where my dancers make and test choreography,

Their bodies rise and fall, contorting into beautiful dances, as if they’re swimming through the air,

Another room is a photography hub,

World renowned photographers sift through their gorgeous snapshots, looking for the ones that pop in front of their experienced eyes,

They discuss technique with each other, improving what’s already perfect,

The last room is my digital art room,

Animations of birds flying gracefully through the air adorn the ceiling,

My workers draw on giant screens and sell their work by thrusting their pieces into the cyberworld for buyers waiting at their keyboards to snatch them up,

My factory makes a distraction, gives motivation, and brings happiness to the world,

Or maybe not,

Maybe I just made it all up,

That’s up to you.

Campfire

The sparks blazing in the night,

Shooting into the dark,

The smoke billowing up into the sky,

Curling and unfurling itself among the trees,

The flames licking at the air,

Twisting and reaching up like hands,

The warmth radiating outward,

Bathing my outstretched hands in its heat,

The golden light washing over our faces,

Chasing away the shadows,

I sit watching the flames flicker,

Becoming bigger and smaller,

Like a creature breathing in and out,

I watch it char the wood and newspaper we used to set it alight,

And I’m reminded of the destruction it causes,

Houses, trees, animals, people,

Have all been engulfed by its searing heat,

I can almost hear the screams of its past victims,

I can almost see the devastation left in its wake,

And I fill up a bucket with some water from the pump across from our campsite,

And use it to snuff out the fire,

The beast sizzles and hisses,

And fades into a blackened pile of ash.

Rain

I can smell it,

Its soft metallic scent,

Mixing with the raw smell of dirt and grass,

Everything around me welcomes it,

Finally,

Relief from the scorching sun,

The timid drizzle morphs into a powerful downpour,

The sound of the crashing drops drowns out all of my thoughts,

Filling my head like static,

Until I'm just there,

Just existing,

And nothing else.

The Weeping Willow Tree

Taking vigil atop a hill,

Crying its bright green leaves into the wind,

They cascade down and writhe in the sky,

Grasping at the air like hands reaching out,

The bench taking refuge beneath it seating romantics and bookworms,

Birds perch in its loving arms,

Singing their songs and nestling their babies in the safety of its branches,

This tree is the crown jewel of the park and is loved by many,

Artists trying to capture its beauty on the remnants of another tree,

Children trying to climb up it with their tiny hands and courageous hearts,

Joggers seeking protection from the sun's harsh rays,

People come and go,

But the weeping willow never leaves.

Peace In Pandemonium

Trapped inside my house,

Death is in the air,

Fear is catching,

As all of America sits in front of the TV,

Hypnotized by the condemning news,

Until one by one,

We begin to reach out to one another,

Our faces illuminated by laptop screens,

Our friends and family smiling back at us through our cameras,

Our teachers bestowing their knowledge through our speakers,

Our pastors spreading the word of God through our screens,

Sparking hope,

And soon that hope is flourishing,

And I don’t feel alone anymore,

I know this will end,

It will end because we have each other to lean on,

It will end because we have faith.
