Sleeping My Sorrows Away

I can hear myself snoring
then I suddenly wake!
It sounded maybe
something like an earthquake.

Then I lay on my side
slip back into sleep
I hardly dream
it's so very deep.

Maybe I half wake
then comes a flash of dreams
all about death
but nothing is as it seems.

Someone long gone from my life
is in the back yard digging my grave,
but my father won't have it
my broken neck he wants to save!

I hear my puppy dog whining
she wants to go out;
that's about how I feel
and I also want to shout!

I want to reach Heaven
with my voice
even though I know
my deceased had no choice.

The Lord decided
when He'd take them home
just like He knew
I'd write this poem.

My Pocket Rock

Smooth and warm to my touch
I reach to you for comfort
so you can remind me
of the days I carried your cousin
in my pocket as a young girl.

Then, my pocket rock was pink
with embedded stones
of different colors
all neatly set into it
its surface just a little rough.

I think about the Lord
saying that Peter was the rock
upon which He would build
His church, the one I belong to
that comforts me so today.

In some way,
I carry that church in my pocket.

Baby Bananas

Bunches of baby bananas
bright, beautiful
beloved bitty bites.

Making a Salad For the Pot-Luck

Scooping out avocado
slathering it all over the lettuce
mixing in some beans
adding some chopped eggs, then dressing

Getting creative
I've never made a salad like this
I hope it tastes good
like something made for Thanksgiving

Putting together
whatever I have that's available
feels like playing
little Play-Doh artist in the kitchen

Peek-A-Boo Sun

I saw the sun behind a cloud
its rays fanning out like a crown
making a simple rain cloud look majestic
I couldn't take my eyes off it.

Then the sun peeked out
as if to say, "Ready or not here I come!"
There was no place for me to hide
except under my trusty sun hat.

I saw a lady holding her baby
she'd wrapped him in a baby blanket
the sun sparkled on his cheeks
he must have been too warm.

The clouds raced across the sky
the sun jumping behind them
playing peek-a-boo
while the baby slept unawares.

The sunset was a beauty
golden pinks and sparkly blues
finally the baby yawned
it was time to go home.

Cain & Abel

Adam & Eve had Cain
then they were blessed
with Abel, two sons.

Abel was the herdsman
while Cain was a farmer
Cain bringing an offering to the Lord
of the fruits of the ground;
Abel, meanwhile, gave Him
the firstborn of his flocks.

The Lord was touched by Abel
his offering acceptable,
while that of Cain
the Lord did not find
to be pleasing.

Cain objected to this
being very upset,
so the Lord asked him
why he felt as he did.

The Lord admonished him
warning him that sin lurked
ready to steal his heart
advising him to fight it,
to master it.

Cain remained angered
contriving to take his brother
out into the field,
there murdering him.

So the Lord asked Cain
where his brother was;
Cain sarcastically replied
that he didn't know
retorting as well, asking
was he his brother's keeper?

The Lord admonished him
telling of his brother's blood,
its voice crying out
to Him from the ground.

The Lord cursed Cain
from the earth,
warning him it would no longer
give him good harvest.

Further, Cain would be
a fugitive, homeless,
but Cain begged
saying his punishment
was too great to take.

He feared for his life
that his brother's murder
would soon be avenged.
Also that he would be hidden
from the face of the Lord.

However, the Lord marked Cain
warning anyone who might
try to take his life
that their punishment
would be sevenfold.

Cain then left the presence
of the Lord
settling in Nod, east of Eden
having a son, Enoch,
with his wife there.

He founded a city
beyond there,
naming it for his son,
calling it Enoch.

G000gle

Like a friend
G000gle always finds me
what I need
though not always
what I want.

G000gle even tells me
a little about myself
though he misses
some of the important stuff.

G000gle, I'm telling you,
there's always more
than meets the eye;
you need to look
deep within.

My Friend Marty

Whenever I go by the local mall
usually he's sitting on the sidewalk
painting pictures from his memory
wild, enchanting places at that.
It'd been a long stormy week;
when I ache, I see it in his eyes too,
so I greeted him and asked him
if he was in need of anything.
He said he'd stocked up on food
when the hurricane was due
but there were a couple of things
he could use, if I might agree.
He said he liked to sip a beer
though he would never get drunk;
maybe I might buy him one
as well as a couple of smokes.
So we went into the grocery;
he picked out his favorite beer,
a couple of packs of cigarettes;
he smiled, a twinkle in his eye.
He talked about the Bible
how Paul told Timothy to drink
a bit of wine to help his ailments;
I'd just read the verse that day!
We agreed there were Scriptures
advising us not to get drunk;
I walked off into the rain then
happy I could help ease his pains.
He thanked me wholeheartedly
gratefulness on his rugged face;
He'd suffered many worse times
during his days in the Marines.
I bring him some bread each week,
some lunch meat or peanut butter;
the church van helps me deliver these
which always makes Marty smile.
I know he sleeps on the floor
of the twenty-four hour Laundry,
helping the owner ward off crooks
who raid the coin boxes mid-night.
I pray for Marty now and then;
I'm pretty sure he prays for me too;
I own several of Marty's paintings,
they hang proudly around my place.

"No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomach's sake and your frequent
infirmities."

All My Children Are In Heaven

Often I am asked
if I have children;
this question
makes me sad, though
I do answer
that I do:
they're all in Heaven.

They died before being born
so the Father holds them
safely in His hands
where no harm can come to them.

Mother's Day is the toughest
day of the year for me;
I want to be with them,
but I don't yet want to die!

"my Pine Tree"

(My very first poem)

I used to hide
In my pine tree
I could feel safe and big
Sitting in my monkey fort.

Now I can't
They say I'm too old
Instead I sit in the cafeteria
Eating my bananas.
