The Runaway Gerbil

There was a hole in your cage
And out ran you
Head held high and laughing
Like a gerbil would do
You hid behind the dryer
And maybe slept a few
And had a merry time
Thinking we couldn't catch you
You grazed on paper
And snacked on the lint
All the while we were wondering
Where the heck you went
But there you sat
After a bout of being free
No more running and hiding
You said catch me
Put me back in my cage
Shut the door tight
Fix that hole in my roof
And, watch out, I bite!

The Sleeping Beast

Sometimes the beast is sleeping
Asleep in the night
And, then sometimes, without warning
And without the morning light

It awakes and it lives
As it wanders through the night
Wanders where it wouldn't go
And knows the things it shouldn't know

And no lullaby goodnight song
Will ease the woken beast
It strikes out in anguished pain
Taking pleasure in its feast

And just when it drifts off
Into a much needed sleep
Another nightmare rips out its heart
And cuts the soul down deep

Cries of despair pass the lips
Of the beast in tortured pain
Close your eyes sweet beast
"Tis only the rain

Hush a bye, my beast
Everything will be fine
What is yours will be yours
And what is mine will stay mine

Ode To Misery

Oh, how misery doth love thy company
With thy dewy face of fallen youth
Glistening sheen of dried tears
Come sit beside me, cry
I shan't give advice
I'll not criticize
Thy tears are like my own
So sit beside me, cry
Lay your weary head upon my lap
I will stroke away your furrowed brow
And might I listen to your woes
Lay here beside me, cry
Tears are like rain upon thy soul
Released on barren ground grow
Flowers of wishful thinking
Hold mine hand, cry
Do not weep alone
Waste not those tears on deaf hearts
Let me take thy pain unto myself
We'll be together, cry

Fear

Heart pumping, nerves jumping
Brain racing, feet are pacing
Hands shaking, insides quaking
White knuckled, knees buckled
Eyes darting, lips parting
Nail biting, stomach tightening
Ears listening, sweat glistening
Throat closing, no sense dozing
Body shivers, spine quivers
Teeth chatter, lose your bladder
Muscles tense, so much suspense
Sitting, staring, noises blaring
Walking, running, stumbling, falling
Hearing, listening, speaking, screaming
                  Stop...
            Fear is here!

Winter's Departure

Spring came back to town today
In all her glorius style
Winter packed up in a huff
And left us for a while

We all thought Spring was gone for good
For Winter had stayed so long
And though we tried to be Winter's friend
She draped us in her cold sarong

She'd ice the roads over
And even freeze the lake
No one forgot her cold demeanor
Or the warmth she'd always take

But when Spring blew in with her flowery array
And the sun seemed to shine so bright
Winter could not stay around
So she left in the middle of night

We know that she's not gone for good
For she always rushes back too soon
As Spring always leaves for Summer
Fall also leaves for Winter's melancholy tune

Loneliness

It creeps into your soul like a thief in the night
Surrounding you, drowning you
It gets its claws in tight
Pulling you under
Making you weep
You toss and you turn
And you just can't sleep
It makes you melancholy
For things that just can't be
Teasing you, freezing you
It's something you can't see
A roomful of people, friends, family
It makes you shut them out
Shows you what can't be
It permeates your heart
Makes it heavy, feels like lead
It turns you inside out
It makes you wish that you were dead
It's hateful and it's spiteful
Twisting every turn
It paralyzes you, cries out to you
Knowing you'll never learn
It sings sad songs while you cry
Praying for relief
It doesn't have a soul
As you wallow in your grief
Head hung low, tears in your eyes
It laughs at your misery
It mocks your mournful cries
It feeds on your broken heart
Growing stronger every day
Belittling you, killing you
Wanting nothing but to stay

I Am a Leaf

I am like the leaf
Blowing in the breeze
Whipped around
And blown down
What about me
No one hears my tiny scream
No matter how I yell
And knowing I am just a leaf
Means I am frail
Kicked around, swept away
Like yesterday's trash
Can't anyone see?
I'll be gone in a flash
I am just a leaf
Fallen from a tree
Does anyone care
What happens to me?
I am not stable
I am not whole
The tree let me fall
My innocence stole
And now I am dying
Crinkly and brown
Tomorrow no evidence
Of me will be found
For I was a leaf
But I am not to be
Blown from my home
That was once a tree

Growing Vines

Green growing vines
        Entwine
        Around
         And up
       And down
Circling the old, old oak
Crawling across the ground
    Inching slowly
       Creeping
 Making no sound

The Vows Not Taken

You do not wish to marry me
Oh, how that breaks my heart
But I will stay with you anyway
Better to be with you, than apart
You tell me that you love me
You say you always will
You only want my happiness
Yet you know how I feel
You promise, but yet do not
No ring will I ever wear
And you say you won't change your mind
My heart is still laid bare
I will always love you
Even if I am not your wife
And you know I will be true
For I am yours for life
